Default New to hobby with a SCX10 Jeep Wrangler KIT

Hello,

I am going to have a SCX10 Jeep Wrangler KIT version.
It was a challenging decision to choose between KIT and RTR, but the upgraded parts that comes with the KIT worth the extra effort.
It will be challenging too, building the KIT from zero...

Now I need some help from more experienced people in relation to what radio+receiver, motor+esc and servo.
I would like to run Li-po so I am thinking about 3000mha 2S 20-40C batteries.

Please give your opinions on what should I buy and if I am right choosing KIT instead RTR.

Thanks in advance

If you have some spare cash, i can recommend you the Holmes Hobby ESC+ holmes hobby brushed engine. In case you wanna upgrade your Rubicon with a vanquish rigid lightbar, i d look into a 3s capable ESC as you get the full brightness of the light bar at 12V.

Also consider if you need a waterproof ESC (sidewinder v3 or holmes hobby) or can you live with a normal ESC?

As for servos, check out your needs. Just watch out for the ones with metal or titanium gears instead of plastic ones.

Depending upon what you are going to use the truck for most of the time. If you're primarily going to do trails, a 27 turn motor will work. If you're doing rocks, I'd start with something in the 35 turn area and maybe go up from there if your needs arise. I run the Holmes Hobbies BRXL in a couple of my trucks and it works for lipo's up to 6's. I also like the Futaba radios. I'd start with at least a 3 channel, again depending on your future plans for the truck. I use metal geared servo's and they work well for me. Mine range from 208 oz. of torque up to over 300 oz of torque. Good luck, post some photo's, and welcome to the hobby and this forum.

NOTE*

I buy RTR trucks these days. My Rubicon was a kit version but my Honcho and Wraith were RTR. I find myself up grading kit parts anyway so I buy the RTR and enjoy the truck right away and do up grades as I go along.

Forgot to add: i have the Rubicon Kit and RTR. As mentioned above,RTR is a good way to start off and have fun right away.

Just upgrade your parts once they brake or so. All i did for a start was a aluminium steering upgrade and upgrade of my servo.

Keep in mind that with a kit to still gotta buy all the electronics which can be costly.

I feel the Axial kits are way easier to assemble than a Losi kit. I came from a TEN-SCTE which is a bit more involved when it comes to building vs an Axial. Once you complete your first kit, it is a great feeling and gives you a feeling of accomplishment.

Thanks for the feedback. As I am in Portugal, there is some brands not so popular here.
Please advise on these parts if you know them:
Graupner Ultramat 14
LRP Lipo powerpack 3800 7.4v 30C 2S
LRP Crawler Special 3
Graupner servo HVS 939 BB MG
Still trying to find the right ESC, radio and receiver.

Do I need a BEC? What is it for?

Thank you all again

bec will regulate the power to the esc. sometimes the servo draws too much power and makes the esc cut. i am instaling one in my rubicon kit . i bought a combo tekin fxr with a 35t brushed motor, savox 0231 waterproof servo. 208oz

The BEC provides power to the RX and servo, not the ESC. The ESC has it's own built in BEC but most are not able to provide the amps a crawler servo asks for, so a higher amperage external is necessary and you disable the ESC BEC by pulling the red wire from the RX plug.

the combo you choosen is not good at all.i had one and sell it right away,it was a pain in the ass,not worth throwing money on that.If u want a brushless setup try a MMP with a Tekin ROC412 and 2s-3s lipo, that will be an awesome setup.as a radio go for Spektrum DX3C,it's cheap and has 3 chanels,As far as the servo, look for Savox, they are not expensive and very reliable

Hi,

Anyone has the same opinion? Why is this crap?

I've chosen this ESC:
LRP Spin Super Brushless Speed-Control
And for the radio:
Absima CR3P with its receiver

Is this a total mess as kitty wrote?

I've changed my mind and the items are now...

Castle Creation Mamba Max Pro ESC + USB programming kit
Axial 55T
Spektrum DX3C DSM2
Savox SC-1267MG High Voltage Digital Servo (do I need a servo horn? which one?)
Hitec X1 AC MF charger
Absima LiPO 7.4V-25C 3000 Hardcase (which connector should I get for MMP ESC?)

Now let me know if I am doing well or not...

Thank you

Your choices are much better now in my opinion. A lot of people use Deans plugs on their batteries and ESC's; I use Traxxas. Which ever plug you choose, make sure to put the female plug on the battery. You'll avoid short circuits that way.I used to use Deans a long time ago, when you could plug them in wrong. I did once and it was expensive so I stopped using them and never went back even after they fixed it so you couldn't cross the polarity. Get a good longer metal clamping servo horn to fit the splines on your servo. I don't use Savox so I can't guide you towards a part number.

The kit comes with plastic horns that will fit all the variations if you don't go with the metal one right away...

that's way better a nice setup, later one maybe you'l change to a brushless tekin roc412,with that esc,it's gonna be a blast.i looked at that servo, not so strong,i would recomend this one instead, same money, but monstruous torque, and yes, don't forget, you will need a BEC,and the best to use is Castle Creations BEC.here is the link for the servo,it's a litle taller then standards, but just add some spacers in the mounting place and your good to go

That's gigantic torque!
Will I need a BEC for what? This MMP has a BEC that cuts the power to 5v and 7v, since de servo is high voltage I don't think I need one. Receiver is good till 9v too. What do you think?

I've got my Kit with me and I realized that is body doesn't come with outer masking. Is this usual?
Should I mask outside when I am painting it?

Thank you.
