I think it's rated up to 10 volts so your battery should be fine.
I know this is silly but is your battery hooked up right, red to red and black to black?

Try and use a smaller 6 cell battery to see if it still does it. If it does then you know its not battery related, if it don't then problem solved.

Do you have a spare battery that you can use to test? Maybe it's that battery your using, might be a short or something, not an expert but this exact situation happened on my buddies Slash 4x4, found out it was the battery.

This site.... http://www.axialracing.com/ftp/scx10/ shows 7.2VDC as stock (6 cell NiCD/NiMH). I highly doubt the additional cell is an issue though.

Did you build the rig is is it a RTR?

On my TR, the esc got hot during the first pack of batteries ran through the truck. It just kept doing it, so I upgraded.

I would write Axial and they may replace the esc.

Also, before you buy another esc like the xl5, decide what kind of driving you want to do.
Will you need a drag brake?
Will you ever run a brushless motor?
Will you ever want to run lipo batteries?

It would suck to buy a new esc based on someones recommendation to find out it doesn't fit the bill for your truck.

Is your motor hooked up right?

It sorta sounds like you got some wires crossed somewhere.

No, not a brake. The xl5 has a brake but not a "drag brake".
If your going to bash/trail run most traxxas ESCs will work for you but if you want to ever crawl with it, you may want to research other options.

I do crawl with it also! What would be a good esc for a 27 turn motor?
