Default 2.2 Advice

The added stress of the weighted 2.2 TSL's caused my poor old Axial 27t to smoke last night. It was also running quite slow with a lack of apparent power when in a tight spot. I was running 2s which has always been really good with the 1.9s. (I will make sure my bats are fully charged next time I test)

So I tried the 3s I have. Things have a lot more poke and it was great fun. I think I need to go the 3s route for new batteries in future. I did bust a drive shaft though and have now glued in some rod to try and strengthen them.

Question: I'm running 14/87 gearing and 27t motors. Is that suitable for 2s use in a 2.2 scx? Or do I need a lower turn motor or stick to 3s?

I really like the 2.2's and dont want to go back but I need the reliability I had in the 1.9 rig.

Wraiths are 20/80 gearing, 20T motor and 2.2's out of the box.

You've been around here a while and know what larger, heavier options do to a drive train not designed for them. Run the 2.2's and 3's and replace broken parts more often. Maybe run your 2.2's on 3's a 35 turn motor and beef up the drive train a little. Just my opinion.

I've glued some rods into the drive shafts. I'll see how they hold and I'll try my other ball raced 27t motor. The Axial motor has been very well used and it probably causing issues due to its inefficiency.

The drive shaft mod will certainly help. I try and always remember this while building, "for every action-there is a re-action" Plan ahead.

I tested in the garden and the front one sheared a pin! I now have a bodged together Traxxas shaft on the front. Think I need to invest in some punisher shafts. :-/

There's that re-action I was speaking of. Run the Traxxas shaft for a while, many do with good results.

It's a proper bodge. I'm not sure it will last long. It's a combination of two old shafts from my Stampede 4x4. All plastic. Hopefully it will get me through tomorrow's trail! I'll stick to 2s that should help....I could stick my 1.9's back on but I want to use the TSL's.

The next reaction will be from my bank account. :-/ haha

Isn't that the truth. I'm running 1.9 TSL's on my Jeep. I haven't broken anything yet but my wallet is at the ready.

2.2s on this one for about a year. Just had to replace a driveshaft. 2.2s on my old honcho for a year, no broken parts. Both all stock running gear (except wraith axles on this one) both ran 2s lipos.

I think I need to sort the shafts AND try and stick to 2s then. Thanks for the good news! :-)

i say stick with 2s and swap out the motor for a 35t or something. i ran my honcho with 2.2's on 2s lipo with a 55t motor with no broken parts. now im running 1.9 baja claws with the same 55t motor and will be a ford crew cab hardbody.

Thanks. I will definitely get a 35t next. I have removed the failing Axial 27t and put in my spare ball raced 27t for now. It seems a lot better. The Axial has been on it's way out for a long time now. It almost spins freely! My personality has more magnetism.
