SCX10 Baja Bug Build

I started out with a more or less stock dingo kit, with the only real change being different wheels/tires. I've had it for a few months and had wanted to get a new body for a while. So I recently picked the proline baja bug body for Revo.

The wheelbase of the body was close to the dingo's wb but not quite close enough. I was lazy and left the front end alone. For the rear I switched to 4 link and made new links, 140mm end to end, leaving me with a ~12.1" wheelbase.

The dingo front bumper doesn't fit too well with the narrow nose of the body. I lopped off the side bars and extra bumper material on the sides. I'll probably close the ends off with epoxy putty or styrene.

And here it is on the body.

Haven't decided what to do yet with the rock sliders or rear bumper. I don't have stuff to braze with so I may just go bumperless for now. As far as the sliders I may try to make something out of sheet metal.

Spent this evening working on putting on the window masks, masking off the engine and putting paint on the shell...

Here's the main body color, I used spaz stix sky blue.

And coated that with white backer.

Ran out of time tonight to finish it off. If the weather's good tomorrow I may get the engine chromed.

I've enjoyed following your Buxom Melons thread, it was one of the big reasons I decided on the bug body . Your bug looks good with those larger tires. I had gotten these 1.9 geolanders for a more scale appearance with my dingo, but they look a little dinky with the bug body. It seems more like 1/8 scale compared to the dingo. I may have to go back to my ripsaws for the time being.

I guess my next project is finishing up the bumper. After that I'm thinking about making some wheel wells so that not so much of the chassis shows .

The ripsaws fill up the wheel wells a little better

Re: SCX10 Baja Bug Build

Started working on some wheel wells. Finished up the patterns and cutting out the styrene. Only got one assembled tonight tho. It's pretty snug at the moment, so i may need to trim it some to keep it from rubbing paint off the shell. I also may add some more styrene to reinforce the seam or maybe some shoe goo after i paint it.

Re: SCX10 Baja Bug Build

Worked a little the last few days on the bug. I finished up the front bumper. I ended up using epoxy putty to cap off the ends that I removed. After it set up I used a file to straighten the edges a bit to make them look more like the rest of the bumper. Next I sprayed it with black plastidip. I figured it would be more resistant to chipping than paint. Anyway, it could have been better, but I think it turned out looking ok.

Re: SCX10 Baja Bug Build

I decided to get some big monster wheels for the rear. I like the look of the big and littles, but I haven't had a chance to try them out on a trail or anything to see how they perform.
I think either my right rear axle is bent or I've got a bad bearing; the right rear wheel has wobbled since I got the kit, regardless of the wheels/tires on there. :(
I'm ready for temperature to drop, it's been too hot here to get out and do much trailing.

Re: SCX10 Baja Bug Build

Lookin good. Now extend the wheelbase a little and put some 1.9" beadlocks with some TSLs, pitbulls, or get a set of tires and wheels from a jeep j/k rubicon. Lookin golden!

Re: SCX10 Baja Bug Build

yeah the wheelbase is looking a little short with the bigger wheels. It looked fine with the smaller 1.9's i started with. The 2.2's in the back make it look a bit cramped, but they don't rub even with full shock compression. I may extend the rear links if i keep the 2.2's.
