Default Rear axle sounds like gears stripping

My son was driving his rig today and out of nowhere it sounds like gears in rear axle are grinding. I take it apart and everything looks fine has grease and all. I guess my question is is it possible for the gears to be toast in it? It is a rubicon rtr completely stock other than some steering upgrades and running 2.2s

Disconnect the drive shaft and see how freely it spins.

The noise may not be coming from the rear. Take a look at your motor pinion and spur gear.

My locker broke its little tabs and was slipping in the plastic housing and it sounded like that. If the gears look good open up the carrier.

Go ahead and epoxy the locker into the carrier and shim the pinion .

Ok I'm almost positive it is the rear axle cause you can see it sort of bouncing when it does it. I tried shims with the same result. Ill take it apart when I get home and check the locker

Ok so it spins freely. I disconnected and it know longer does it. I took it back apart and locker is fine but teeth on ring look slightly rounded on the edge. Is there a way to shim the pinion in to ride the teeth deeper into the ring.

Your last post said you already shimmed it?

^ this statement...
Has me thinking your drive shaft was out of phase...
misaligned drive shafts make the axle(s) jump due to imbalance.

My son had this issue with his honcho after disassembling the axle from the chassis.
There are alignment marks on both outer ends of the drive shafts.
My son failed to realize this.
If those are ground down or can't be found...
align the pin(s) at both ends of the DS's, at the trans./axle output shaft.

Besides this issue...
my son thought there was something wrong in the transmission...
sounding like a bad gear mesh...

Turns out it was simply one of the pins holding the driveshaft
near the transmission cover had backed out slightly...
This was rubbing against the trans. cover sounding like booger'd gears.
Nope... but a little locktight on the thread of that pin...
would likely keep those from backing out.

Yes I did shim it just figured I'd get some opinions on it.

Did you actually take the iron cross locker out? Were the two tabs intact?

Modified HD Bevel Gear Set for Axial AX10 Scorpion for R/C or RC - Team Integy
ima using that locker in the rear of mine the only thing i found with it was the bearing wouldnt go on the side without the gear so i had to grind it down abit to get it to fit other than that ive had no problems with it

How much shim did it take? If there is nothing else wrong you could check to see if the three bolts that hold the out drives to the final gear in the tranny have loosened up.

I used a washer from a set of 2.2 wheels to shim and it almost seemed like it was to much but still did it. I completely disassembled the axle and all looked good except for the far outside edge of gear was slightly rounded. I put another complete axle I have for a project I'm working on and it no longer does it. Do you guys have any suggestions for what to use for shims and are really thin so maybe I can fine tune it. I ordered a new set of gears for it even if I don't use them ill have a set just in case. Thanks for the help

I use these to shim pinions: Clutch shim kit In my wraith I have .4mm in one axle and .6mm in the other with traxxas bushings.

Did you open the carrier and check the two tangs on the locker?
