The common causes of over heating are:

  • The gearing is too high.
  • There is binding somewhere in the drive train
  • The spur/pinion mesh is way too tight.
The gearing should be somewhere in the range of 87/14 to 87/16.
Loosen the motor so the pinion doesn't touch the spur and see if the drive train turns freely. If you have binding remove the drive shafts one at a time to help locate where the binding is occurring.
Use a piece of paper between the spur and pinion when you adjust the mesh so you don't have it too tight.

+1

The bigger tires makes your motor strain more causing it to run hotter.
A smaller tooth pinion will cause less stress on the motor and more capable of turning your larger wheels/tires.

Im using a 17t with an 87t spur but running the 1.9 wheels/tires and its just about right.. Id try a 16t or smaller or another option is a larger spur gear.

Diffs are different. Wraith diffs came from the AX10. I think only a couple of parts are similar. I believe the transmission gears are the same.

Wraith, scx and ax all run the same diff and trans gears. Wraith trans has different outputs on the backside.

Cheers I think I'll try smaller pinion and check the mesh. How easy should wheels turn when checking for binding etc ?

Move the motor pinion away from the spur and check resistance, should roll easily.

If memory serves me right... The 2.2 wheels have a deeper hex than the 1.9, so if you have 2.2 wheels on the 1.9 aluminum SCX hexes the wheels are likely rubbing in your steering knuckles.
