My first build from scratch, possibly with a Range Rover body :-)

Hey guys, first post, first thread here.

I've been in the RC hobby for 4-5 years now, mostly just bashing although I, a few years back, got into some 1:10 scale electric touring car racing.

I'm 35, married, a father of three, school teacher and we have a cat called Batman

I chose the SCX-10 over a Tamiya tracktor truck, the Tamiya King Hauler. A truck is cool, but it would end up costing me way more than I want to spend right now on rc stuff.... + when I was younger I was the proud owner of a 1988 Range Rover that my wife and I used for off road driving here in Denmark.
Three kids, an old house and mortgage payments put an end to that though.

My last project was getting an old Losi Aftershock monster truck up and running. It was converted to brushless and then "pimped" out, making it look the way I feel a MT should look.

I usually take a lot of photos of my rc's an occasionally "pretty" them up with software ;-).

But I digress...

This is the only photo of my new build.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/04/eqe8uve2.jpg

The build doesn't officially start until next week unfortunately, work has a habit of getting in the way of fun.

I allready have a motor and an ESC as well as a servo.

ESC = Losi Xcelorin (sensored), bought it used, came with a Xray T2'008 i bought... great ESC.
Motor = Robitronic 17,5 turn sensored motor, came from the same Xray T2'008
Servo = JR Z590M 85 ounce, came from the Losi Aftershock, after I had to switch out his twin..

So electronics were free, sort of.

The transmitter will be a DX6i, that came with a Blade 120 SR heli, that I rarely, if ever touch any more... I've purchased parts to add a spring to the left stick (throttle) making it able to return to center, when letting go of the stick.

I'm looking for any and all advice you guys are willing to divulge about the SCX-10. How to build it properly, what to look out for.

I'm not planning on doing any upgrades right away, I just wanna build it, drive it, break it and then upgrade it. The only "upgrade" I'm looking to do would be to find a Range Rover body to fit on to it, but no luck so far.

As mentioned, any comments greatly appreciated.

Welcome Coach. I built a Dingo back in March, and have been having a blast with it with my son ever since..

The build isn't that overly difficult. I found the instructions pretty easy to follow. Just take your time, only open the parts bag that it calls for at the time. If you stay organized, you won't have any problems.

Good luck. Of course, if you have any questions, you know where to ask them...

Thanks, I appreciate that.. I'll try an update this thread regularly with information about the build.

Not enough time to start the build, but found a few minutes to get the workshop ready for the build.

Decided to get the bags up on the wall and ready to be opened.

Started the build

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
First it was time to try and fix my DX6i transmitter... wanted a spring on the throttle stick, but the guy at the store didn't give the correct parts :-(... my own fault, should have checked the bag...

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
Two axles done :)

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
Shocks done and the three link attached... is it called a three link??

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
Now were cooking!!!!

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
The bags are slowly but steadily coming down from the parts wall :)

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
My wall of plastic parts has been taken down and and opened one by one... I understand the need to put different parts on different trees, but come on!!

More to come...

Haha, your last pic says it all. Mine was the same way, I figured since they were lettered that's the order they would go by. Boy, was I wrong.

Something I would change though would be a new steering servo. The one you listed doesn't really have enough power to turn the wheels, especially if you get into a bind, and you'll just end up getting frustrated and it will burn out. The servo I run is a Savox 0251MG, which has 222 oz/in at 6v. Another recommendation is a Savox SA-1231SG, 444 oz/in at 6v.

Anyways, just take your time, enjoy the build (it's half the fun) and enjoy your truck after, and welcome to the addiction "thumbsup"

Coach-Z 11-08-2013 11:55 PM

Just ordered a BMS-660 with around 200 ounces at 6V... I'm going to power it with a separate BEC.

That particular servo is what I run in my Losi Aftershock - brushless converted, monster truck.

I know others say at least 400 ounces but that's not in my budget.

I also have a Savox 0254 MG or a Futaba BLS451 servo to choose from.

The Savox and the Futaba are from my onroad 1:10 electric TC cars. The fastest and strongest is actually the Futaba. I might do a switch and put the old monster truck servo in the onroad car, and use the Futaba.

Re: My first build from scratch, possibly with a Range Rover body :-)

Out of those two, the Futaba would be the better choice, the amount of torque it has is enough if you aren't going to weight your wheels a lot. I only run 3.75 oz's on Axial 1.9's (I'm cheap and they work lol) and I'm still running the stock servo that was in my Dingo from around 4 years ago, which is now my Hummer (soon to be F250).

Decided on the Futaba, for now it works for me, but that might change as I put the truck to work...

Couldn't help myself and worked sunday night and monday morning (being a teacher at a boarding school kicks ass) and ended up with this.

Still a lot to do, but I now have a rolling working truck.

Gonna be showing my room mate this thread! He's on the fence between the HPI King Crawler and an Axial Kit.. been bringing up the dingo kit to him and he seems interested. Yours came out great! You sticking with the body? I know you mentioned a Range Rover early on.

Coach-Z 11-12-2013 12:09 AM

Well you know, it's a body, you can change it... I haven't found a Range Rover body, so yes right now I'm staying with this body.

Re: My first build from scratch, possibly with a Range Rover body :-)

Was planning on building a trail route in my backyard today, but its been pouring down all day, so I've been doing some painting instead.

Ive also adjusted my transmitter, which is the GT3B for now, until I get my DX6i up and running.

EPA is set to 70%, both left and right, otherwise the servo looks to be trying to sheer the steering links

EXPO is set to its max, as in I want the throttle to be totally docile :)

And of course a few photos.

An esc that could brake the truck when on an incline would be nice

Made a parallel battery wire to be able to place two batteries on the rails..

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse

Also changed out the pinion from the stock 20 tooth to a 15 tooth.

Not sure if the battery idea is any good, but I'll try it for a couple of packs.

My first mod...

My first mod.

The two battery setup, has been changed. Added a piece of lexan to the frame to place the batteries on.

http://rc.webgallerier.dk/album/fuld...-rover-karosse
I used the two velcro straps from the kit to really strap down the batteries

Also changed the way you insert the body clips... Axial made it really difficult, this way is much easier.

Looks good. 10,000mah? what are your run times like? 3 days?

Coach-Z 11-16-2013 03:41 PM

More or less... I used to drive onroad touring cars so I have a bunch of these types of batteries.

To have a balanced setup with the batteries on the rails I needed to use two of them.
