Default Down travel at ride height?

Okay I still consider myself a newbie in the RC crawling world. Use to be big into nitro stadium trucks.

But anyways this just came up over on Harley's scx10 "lower 40" build thread. I know on most low built 1:1s rock crawlers not ultra 4 we sacrifice a lot of our up travel for the low stance. For example on my 1:1 at ride height I have 4 inches of up travel but 10 inches of down.

All the rigs I've seen on here including my one is 90mm of up travel on a 90mm shock at ride height. Is there anyway to get these rigs squatting at ride height? The shock combo and rig weight don't seem to agree is all....

you'll never get 90mm of upward shock travel from a 90mm shock, it's just physically impossible unless you have some non-stock suspension setup. I think what you're asking is how you can setup your rig to have minimal up-travel, but lots of downtravel at ride height -- this is what is considered a "droop" setup. If your rig's weight won't compress the shocks enough at ride height you will most likely need to change your spring rate or preload to achieve this, or install internal springs to compress the shocks. most shocks have several spring rates available, so you may want to pick up a few sets to tune your rig to your liking.

Heard the Losi shocks are decent with lots of springs available. Think they were the mini crawler 1/18 scale?

I rather not set up the mounts to a droop set up cause the shock will still not be compressed under the rigs weight. Ill be researching some different shocks and hopefully finding some light springs.

The 1/18 springs, not the shocks work well for some. On Traxxas big bore shocks they make for a nice combo.

Scaling down your 4" up and 10" down of 1:1 travel, roughly. Would be almost 1.5" of full travel on your 1:10 shocks. Which isn't asking too much from your current setup of 90mm shocks. Try softer springs if the chassis weight isn't squatting the stance enough. I, too, prefer low slung rigs for stability.

I have the G Made G Transition shocks for my scx10 and they are set in droop right now. awesome low center of gravity and awesome articulation.

What i do on my trucks is run the long stock scx spring without the short upper spring. The shock sits at about mid travel at ride height. I run 2 trucks this way and i really like it because the wheels can follow the terrain better and i can get the low ride height that i always prefer.

I use the Traxxas 100mm BB's
With Losi 4" soft (white) springs.

I have about 1/2" of static droop.
The weight of the chassis will dictate what spring rate.

Ideally your rig should sit static with about a 60/40 travel ratio.
edit: ^ that's 60% compression and 40% rebound
Mine is maybe closer to 50% up/down. (I crawl slow)

Static compression or droop settings
may require different adjustments for operating at high speed or slow crawling.

My chassis weighs in at around 7.5 lbs.

I also pre-load the driver rear CO
with a 1/8" pre-load collar.
This is to compensate somewhat for the chassis's torque twist.

Another option for that would be to "mirror the transmission"
