Default gear ratio for 35t/2s

I'm running a Holmes hobbies torquemaster expert 35 turn and a onyx 5700 mah 25c 42wh 2s lipo on a 80/20 gear ratio and I noticed that after a good run my motor gets a little warm so my question is what would be the ideal gear ratio for this setup? I'd like to keep as much wheelspeed as I can so any input here would be appreciated

Drop a few teeth down on the pinion gear.

Easiest way to gain or keep your current wheelspeed, without the heat, is to increase motor rpm with voltage and lower the gearing. It'll run cooler and be alot more efficient.

Cheapest way to accomplish a cooler setup, with what you currently have, is go to a smaller pinion. Usually close to a 5:1 ratio at the spur/pinion is almost perfect.

Alright so I guess i'll pick up a few different pinions and experiment with those and if that doesn't work like I want then I'll grab a 3s thanks for the info

80/20 is way to tall..its asking a lot of amps from your motor to get your rig going.

I would say try 87/20 and go from there up or down till you find a sweet spot you can live with for what you want from it without heating issues.

I run 87/16 with a 27T and have plenty of torque and wheel speed although I would have more with a 27T with all gearing being equal.

I use a motor plate heat sink and a motor heatsink to help fight heat..Works very very well..I recommend them to anyone who wants to gear up or down more but had a heat issue.

I run at right about 120-125 all day long with my gearing at just over 6lbs of weight and with a 2s battery...Im thinking about going to a 14T pinion and taking some wheel speed away to gain more low speed control but still have enough wheel speed to get me up the hill and through the mud or over the rocks.

You can try the 3s and you may like it as many do; but just be prepared to make some more upgrades if you haven't already as you have to be more cautious with the throttle to keep from breaking things. Taco taught me that..power up but just be careful not to use it all or youll break youre stock stuff...lol

Right Taco?

When i had a 35t in my wraith i found 87/16 worked great for me. For a 35t motor i like a 5.5 to 1 ratio. For 2c it helps keep the wheel speed

I don't even know what gear pitch the OP is inquiring of !?
and I'm not good at reading minds.

that's why I referred the OP to you
I use 48P gears so only know those ratios

You are the king of 2s aren't you ?

I follow your build because it's honcho...
And primarily because it's not just another Jeep
I think you've done a fine job in regards to your wants.
Tho' most of what you have done...
I have already done... or simply choose to ignore.

But dammit... the 3s is still a "no brainer"

quit being a hard ass and just try it !?

It will not cost you more then you've already spent.
A 3s LiPo battery can be had for $15.00
And you won't break parts just because you installed that...
It would only break often, if you own a finger made of lead !? Lol

Now 4s or even 6s...
yer stock junk would disintegrate into nothingness. Lol

It's gotta be 48p, an 80t 32p spur wouldn't fit me thinks.

you will have to go down on teeth to lose the heat and you will lose wheel speed...try the STRC motor plate and a 3racing motor sink and see if you can keep it like you have without over heating; if that's what your happy with so far

you may be able to gear for more speed with it. (using a 2s or 3s)

Just something to think about.

^

What is the reasoning for running a 80T spur W 20T pinion ?
More torque (rotating mass)... if the pinion gear is taller/heavier ?

I thought the original set up was 87T spur and 20T pinion.

80Ts / 20Tp = 4.0 (yours)
87Ts / 20Tp = 4.35 (stock)
87Ts / 16Tp = 5.43 (mine)

My thought is your gearing is too tall.
And that will make the mtr. run hot.

Try an 18T pinion if wanting to be close to stock.
80Ts / 18Tp = 4.4444444 (nearer stock)

I still run the original 87T spur and dropped to a 16T pinion running 3s
my motor gets barely warm to the touch.
It's no speed demon... but has lots of torque.
Think the 16T pinion is the smallest pinion I could fit
using the original 87T spur.
And would need a higher tooth count
at the spur gear to gear down further.

Thread dead bump

Running a Holmes Torquemaster Expert 35t, 3s, and 32p gears.

Spur: 54t
Pinion: 11t

Results: Trucks just too slow for me. barely faster than i walk. I have a 10t pinion as well, figured with the 3S i might want to slow it down, but instead, seems i need to gear up.

Just ordered a 12t and 16t from an Exo though. Should be here next week. I'll have to keep an eye on temps, but i miss my wheel speed

Oh we'll if you want more wheel speed, try a 20/87 or a 17/80. I've had good luck with both of those.
