| SCX speed question
Here's a quick question for you guys... I replaced the motor and ESC, in my dingo, from a Tazer 10 turn LIPO Sade ESC with drag brake and a 550 stock motor, too a Hobbywing Juststock 21.5 sensored brushless system. Still running the standard spur/pinion gears, but my wheel speed has dropped. The brushless system is 3s compatable. So my question is, which avenue to pursue? Pinion/spur change, or 3s conversion. I was happy with the old speed, but I am worried about the speed increase with 3s... Please help... |

going up on the pinion will give you more speed ...Maybe try a 23/24 tooth pinion..just watch your temps. I cant say what is good gearing with a 3s but someone will im sure. Last edited by 6sharky9; 12-16-2013 at 03:50 PM. |

Increasing voltage allows you to retain low speed control and still have a bit more speed. Probably would be the best from a pure performance viewpoint. If you have an investment in 2S batteries already then play around with the gearing, it is unlikely you will stress a 21 turn brushless no matter what the gearing on an scx10, but as sharky says, monitor temps.

Thanks for the advice guys... I found a solution. I recently bought another SCX10 honcho, and today I decided to strip it down and rebuild it. I was looking over the parts, and found the spur/pinion in the new SCX10 to be 80/23. So I opened the Dingo, and checked the spur/pinion in the Dingo. To my surprise, I found it to be 87/13. Now I understand my wheel speed problem. Simple solution, swapped spur/pin ions over and my wheel speed is much better... |

Hmmmm..I guess only the RTR models come with 87/20 gearing...Shrugs*

You have a lot more speed possible going higher than a 13 Tooth. I would try a 16T..would be night and day difference and still have plenty of torque. Again; just watch motor temps If for any reason you find yourself breaking spur gears you may want to consider moving to 32 pitch gears instead of the 48P. Thanks dude Basically, what I did was install the 80 tooth spur and 23 tooth pinion into my Dingo, with the 21.5 turn brushless, 1600KV @ 8.4 volts, and she's back to more or less the same speed it was before. 81/23 = 27.09 87/13 = 51.48 So you can see the difference between the 2 different final drive ratios. |

Oh, and the 550 can claims 20 000 rpm @ 12 volts, so I'm assuming @ 8.4 volts it would be around 14 000 rpm. More or less the same...

Just watch your temps especially under load such as crawling and full speed blasts..You want a compromise of speed and torque basicly...to far either way isn't really a good compromise. But if doesn't get hot and you like it then that's what you should keep it at. |

Oh and lastly, I installed my telemetry temp sensor into the Dingo, what temp should the motor get too?

I guess this technique applies as well for brushless...If you can put your finger on the motor after running out a pack and hold it there for 5 seconds without needing to take your finger off because its too hot then your ok. If you cant then it may be getting too hot | |

You can go to 170* on brushless. 80/23 is a lot of gear for crawling...unless you want more top end.

We ran the trucks on Friday, and she ran perfect. I agree with you on the gearing being a bit high, but for now it's fine. Next time I'm at my local hobby shop I'll pick up a 20 tooth pinion... |
