First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Scx10 Rubicon RTR. Installed the diy aluminum 4-link and a diy lift. took it out in the yard and did fine but when got in notice a sort of squeaking from the drive shaft. figured it might be pinon angle so a messed with the rod ends to clock the axles a little to get a better angle but now its skipping or something, it drives and climbs but something isn't right.

Links where made to same size as stock 4 links and lift is the mount is just below stock so not much height gain.

Have you checked the slipper clutch.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Nope i've yet to take the dusk guard off and check anything yet.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Make sure your center drive shaft yokes are lined up right. There is a small line on each end that is used to line up the ends with each other. Hope that is all that is.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

looks like its lined up, the tiny raised line in the plastic at each shaft end is lined up with the pins, removed dust cover, spur and pinon look good no objects loged or teeth broken, all grubs still in, mesh seemed a little to tight back it off a tad slipper is tight.

put wheels back on and still jumpy. flipped her upside down and tested it and its located somewhere in the front end, rear axle and drive shaft seem to be operating fine.

going to pull the lift off tomorrow and see if that does anything... if not guess i gotta open the front axle

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

I watched the video and I couldn't hear or see the problem. The drivetrain IS going to look a little sloppy and skipping will happen when it's up in the air, but if it actually drives around pretty normal, then don't worry about it.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

ya it drives pretty normal, except for a weird hopping or skipping noise and a little bounce while driving which wasn't happen on the trail before this.

Already Checked: Pinon angle, Pinon gear, Spur Gear, Gear Mesh, Drive shafts Aligned, Grubs Screws tight, Slippers Tight, Nothing Binding or touching Drive Shafts.

Need to Examine: Lift Kit to see if its affect it in someway, Axle Gears, ????

Is there anything else i should check over?

I think you got it all covered. Let us know if you find anything out.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Disconnected the drive shafts from the axles, the rear axle spins freely forever, the front spins but comes to a stop in about half the time of the rear.
Swapped the drive shafts and the hopping is still in the front end.

But whats weird is the skipping sounds are coming from the center tranny.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Is it a stock motor the only thing i can think for you to try is remove the front shaft and drive it that way on a hard surface if it is still present then it is in the front end if not it is ur drive shaft. if it does this with the front drive line out u may have broke a idler gear in the trans or the screws that hold ur output in the trans have backed out. but i would first completely dismiss the front axle first.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Removed the front Drive shaft. the glitching in the rear is not present looking at the tires but i can hear something in the trans slipping or something.

drove it on the kitchen floor and it seems like its slipping hard somewhere in trans, total lack of power, an the hopping effect is still there while driving.
the slipper clutch is, im pretty sure 100% tight i can grab the wheel and they spin right out of my hand no matter how much pressure i hold them with.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Opened the transmission case, all gears are fine, no objects or screws logged, everything spins freely...

closed it all up and hooked up the rear drive shaft(tabs aligned) still making a hopping effect!

idk what else to do except check both axle diff gears or somehow the motor

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

I think it might be a broken ear on the diff lock in the diff assembly but I may be wrong

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

gonna open up the axles tomorrow i guess, not much left to check. if i cant find anything then guess ill drive it till some catastrophic goes wrong...

My Dingo does the same thing, but intermittently. I haven't managed to solve the problem. But it seems to have gotten much less lately.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

You didn't strip a wheel hex or wheel did you?

Cr4wl3r 01-12-2014 11:43 AM

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Wheels and wheel hex are all in great shape, haven't opened the axles yet but the dog bone pins are good and not hitting.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

What about the pin that holds the slipper to the trans shaft?

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Take the front drive shaft off the axle pinion and try spinning the pinion by hand.

Re: First Shafty, Tans skipping?

Hey I just thought of something, could be nothing, but worth a try. How old is the scx10? Could the crown wheel and face of the diff be worn? Maybe the crown wheel needs to be shimmed forward slightly. Like they do on real diffs. It's time to open the diffs...
