CVD Question

I've noticed quite a bit if play in the CVD shafts in the rear axle. I have it torn apart, but am not sure what to be looking for. Is play in the CVD normal, or is there an issue with the bearing on the main gear?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)

After further inspection, the play is between the hex and the notch in the CVD shaft to hold the bearing in place. Is it possible that the previous owner put the wrong size bearing on it, and that is where the play is coming from?

Re: CVD Question

Rear steer ?

My non rear steer axle housing has two solid one piece axle shaft(s).

Guess I'm a little confused as to the reference of "CVD Shaft" ?

if there is lateral run out in the shaft... (in and out movement)
a thin washer can be placed in board of the pin(s)
and this would tighten up that tolerance/run out.

too thick of a washer could cause bind
or not allow the hex to seat fully.

If you look between the hex and the bearing there a gap. The shaft is loose.

Having some "play" in and out there is not abnormal (maybe 1/16"). If you are worried about it you can shim the bearings. However this is not needed and you won't see any adverse effects. If you are having significantly more than that then maybe you have an assembly issue.

Re: CVD Question

those axle shafts don't look like my stock units.
thought mine were a grayish color... not black.
hmmm... after market something ?

regardless...
put a thin shim washer inboard of the hex's pin.
that will remove some of the axle shaft's end play/runout.

basically it is the bearing moving in and out
between it's seat of the axle tube (end)
and the seat of the lockout.

^ are you utilizing the stock plastic lockouts ?

shimming will help...
probably only one shim per side.

if those shims are too thick...
the play might be gone...
But then it's possible a bind might occur instead.
or that the hex will not seat properly on the axle's pin.

there has to be a little end play of the axle shaft...
but not as much as mine had when new out the box.

I used traxxas shims found at my LHS
tried two... but two was too thick for my circumstance.
so one shim per side is likely the most it will accept.

Re: CVD Question

my stock axles are black, those sure aint CVD axles, and the play is absolutely normal, like taco said, one shim will help, but honestly why bother?

Re: CVD Question

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I got my SCX10 on a trade, so I have no idea what was, or wasn't, done to it. I am happy with it, not complaining, just want to make sure the play wasn't going to be an issue. I use the truck as a truck puller once in a while, and don't want it coming apart half way down the track. LOL

Re: CVD Question

^ was an issue for me.
probably because I'm a stickler regarding maintenance
and some factory tolerances are not as good as they can be.

IMO. If improvement can easily be done...
and it costs next to nothing to do...
then why wouldn't any rc enthusiast do that ?! http://i.imgur.com/cddTR.gif
