Honcho home built bumpers Figured I better start my own thread... and stop cluttering up other folks threads  * My apologies to those whom I may have offended. I have no excuse for cluttering your thread. Sooo... this was my first attempt at making bumpers to this scale... Was using a 220v mig... .025 wire (< kinda' heavy duty for this job) so when I booger'd a weld... trying to fix that with a grinder... just made it worse :x No matter... function/durability is more of what I'm after. and this round was primarily to see if I could. Besides... after they get hammered up a bit... I'll just remove them... and start fresh. Hopefully round two might find my welding skills improved. Front bumper... Mocking up some lights for the front... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...erlights10.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...erlights11.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...erlights24.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...erlights29.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...erlights17.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...perbuild39.jpg front frame boxing/strengthening... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...mperbuild5.jpg Rear bumper... http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...psf1f41bbd.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...psba55146d.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...ps903205e3.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...psd9a10294.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9aa3436d.jpg tail lamp decals... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...mperpics45.jpg Rr. frame boxing/strengthening... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...perbuild23.jpg anyhow... critique away (I won't be offended if you don't like them) I realize they're far from perfect ;-) * Credit for basic design goes to Mattzilla And I thank him... for supplying me with some pre-bent pieces from his bumper designed to fit the Hi-Lux/Mojave bodies. Altered somewhat... I think they'll suffice. |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers looks good! ill take some recent pics tomorrow after work :) |
Wow....looks great! No way I could fab like that....you got some skills |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers Sweet front & rear bumpers So where are the NEW sliders? |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers I like. Tough looking. Nice work. |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers The front bumper has that"Beefy" look to it. I think it's the skid plate. But what ever it it is it looks good. The rear bumper looks better on a honcho with the dinky bed sides then it could have ever wanted to look behind a Mojave body. That thing looks killer. It looks right at home back there. Great job man. "thumbsup" |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers ^ thanks for all the, too considerate, compliments "thumbsup" for me tho'... I know I can do better. So I'm not as happy with my resulting efforts. But I'll clean them up at best as possible... then go hammer them into the rocks. Hopefully they'll handle some abuse. Quote:
gotta happen... next. was eyeballing the rear cage as well... maybe after the Ft/Rr bumpers are painted black... the Rr cage won't stand out like over sized ogre tubing. But I really don't like the look of the thicker tubing of the Rr cage. Looks to be 3" diameter tube work (1:1 scale) ? sliders will be done before the Rr cage garners further attention tho' but first... I need to build/purchase a bender. |
Well, I call any "scratch and dents" you got then...stuff loks great! |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers my home built front and rear "bumper" lol https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...69676910_n.jpg https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...14235179_n.jpg |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers i love the looks of these bumpers anyone running a plate style bumper? my trail honcho is going to try to reflect my 3rd gen 4runner but with a tacoma body. unless anyone knows of a 3rd gen 4runner body. |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers got the front bumper lights mounted and made operational... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...rational18.jpg * No... the tires do not rub the bumpers diagonal tubes at full steering lock. But taller tires (2.2's fer sure) would require relocating the diagonal support tubes. (but it was my intention for tolerances to be exact, using my 1.9 Ripsaws) A somewhat blurry pic of that... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...rational10.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...rational25.jpg http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...rational32.jpg Solely the 4 LED's mounted to the front bumper... http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/p...rational19.jpg now to pull everything back apart... clean 'em up some and paint. Question for those whom might know... In the ^ last picture... the LED's emit light out the backside of the housings. So what's the best way to eliminate that ? Black RTV ? |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers I used some liquid electrical tape on the back of the headlight buckets on Blue and that seems to work."thumbsup" |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers I used a bit of Plasti Dip.. same idea. |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers Seems this would have been the perfect time to have a bumper a bit closer to the body - what was your thinking on having it protrude out so far a la the stock bumper? |

Love it. The rear looks a lot like what I'd like to fab for my six/hilux. Nice work... ... ... |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers ^ thanks :) ------- well... the "clean look" didn't last very long. guess I was somewhat premature with the drying paint   sooo... what ya think now ? Lol http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f0a4f43.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...ps59541ae4.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...psa7b7d466.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...pse60efa42.jpg |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers I don't know if you were going for this look or not but, with the dinky bedsides the front and rear bumpers made the way they are .Plus the lights on top and on the bumper. It seems to me to have a Baja 1000 race truck or desert race truck feel to it. I like it. looks cool as hell..."thumbsup" |
Re: Honcho home built bumpers Wasn't intending any specific look... but since I live in the SW... ...I'll guess that may have been some influence on me !? These bumpers were made just to see if I could... Now that I feel more confident in my construction abilities... I think I'll attempt to duplicate the All-Pro bumpers residing on my 1:1 Tacoma. My son has already started his reproduction of that. And it looks fair in scale, at it's current build stage. So I think I'll be following suit. The front bumper on my 1:1 is somewhat more functional... most primarily because it houses a winch mount. But that winch mount also reduces the fronts approach angle slightly. But at a quick glance... My 1:1 winch bumper doesn't look all that much different then the front bumper I made for the the Honcho. Thanks for your participation and comments "thumbsup" |
