Axle skid (scuff plate)

^ looking for ideas

So my less then 6 month old original plastic front axle housing
has ground thru the underside due to rock rash. (already replaced)
Not a huge issue as replacement axle housings aren't too costly.
But I run "beef tubes" and replacing the axle housing requires that I modify
the original axle housings to fit the beef tubes properly.
So tho' not difficult... the swap is time consuming.

I need to find a better way to protect the axle's center chunk
when dragging that over rocks and such.
At least something that will extend the plastic axle's consumable life.

I don't like the Junfac skid plate style or its obstruction/interference.
Nor any other skid plate design that wastes clearance space. (HR design)
And the alloy axle housings are too pricey to be thrashed in the rocks.
( ^ 'least IMO)

I only wish to protect the underside of the stock axle's center chunk.
( ^ chunk's center line)

I was thinking a nylon strip double sticky tape directly to the axle's
center chunk.
Think the DS'd sticky tape might hold that ?

I'm not finding any great ideas when I search "Axle Skids"
within the SCX-10 folder.
And I've read thru most every "Axle" related thread

Sooo... I'm hoping someone here has some ideas to share
and has made their own skid/scuff plate design.

I do not wish to lose clearance...
at least not any more then the thickness of the scuff plate.
And would want that skid to conform as closely as possible
to the axle's center chunk.

Keeping it as simple as possible would be a big plus ;-)

So before I get busy trying to fab something up...
I thought I would ask here to see what others have done.

Anyone made an axle center chunk scuff protector that works ?
please share that if you would.

thanks ahead, for any ideas that might offer some help "thumbsup"

Re: Axle skid (scuff plate)

Plastic already slides along the rocks well enough, so it would be pretty silly to make it out of metal.

In my honest opinion, trying to make chunk protection may make it worse than going through an axle case every 6 months. Just run it the way it is- it's not like you're having to replace the case every other week.

However, if you still want to take on this idea, What about a chunk of delrin? Kind of how the Vanquish Currie axles are; use some small screws and nuts to hole onto it.

Re: Axle skid (scuff plate)

^ thanks...

but I'm not really interested in threading a screw into the plastic
housing's center chunk.
I doubt it would hold up to much abuse before being ripped out.
And could possibly weaken the axle's center chunk some.
Plus... not sure if there is any room left inside, the center chunk
and the locker, to afford the screw thread bite/clearance.
The walls of the center chunk are fairly thin.

A Delrin/nylon cover/skid could offer the axle's center chunk plastic
a somewhat longer consumable life...
And would take plenty of abuse before the axle's center chunk plastic would be impacted.

But I don't have either material and am not skilled with such material.

I do have some experience with steel tho'
and weld work is not beyond me.
I have come up with a great design,
that would utilize the stock lower screw/bolt holes in the CC's housing.
My design is not on paper or graphs tho'
But if it were molded out of nylon/delrin plastics if would be easier to install.
And would act as a buffer/grind protection to the axle's plastic material.

If I had one of those plastic/nylon 3D printers...
the design in my mind... using flexible nylon material
would allow for an easy fitment and offer a longer axle housing consumable life.
And everyone who has these craptastic axle housings
would want one.

But alas... I have no 3D printer

so steel is what material I would have to utilize.

Guess I'll have to build a prototype...
and then see if I can find someone with a 3D printer
to replicate that design in nylon.

Realize... I'm not trying to obtain impact absorption.
Just a scuff plate that slides easily over rocks...
and eliminates direct contact with the axle's center chunk and sharp rocks.

After recently replacing my front axle housing...
I'm not looking forward to having to do that every 6 months :x
^ call me lazy, if you like

^ the center chunk's plastic material could grind down faster
if operation is spent primarily in the rocks.

These plastic axle housing don't really slide over rocks as smoothly
as one might think.
No...
they get ground down and grooved on the sharper edged rocks quite easily.
And depending on how abusive the owner/operator is...
will determine how long the axle's center chunk will hold up.

------------------

and tho' any input is better then nothing...

folks... please be more optimistic in what could be done.
I don't need folks telling me that it is unnecessary.
or a waste of my time.
I will not agree with that.

I am a retired SeaBee...
the "Can Do" spirit/attitude is the only protocol I understand ;-)

i am working on a simple design made out of .0195 gauge steel with a rockwell of 40... its IF steel that is easily worked with and should slide over rocks like butter

well keep in mind this is just a prototype first version...very rough "thumbsup"

lighting aint the best but hope you can see where I am going with this

I am waiting on a new stock housing to show up to make it easier to make the skid...kinda hard when the thing is in the rig 8)

I love that skid! How about in stainless steel?

looks like it would serve it's purpose, rough or not.

I mostly just want that center ring to envelope the axle chunk's center line.
Does anyone think double sticky tape might secure it ?
Yes I realize that would make for a hassle
if axle maintenance were required.

The wings on the axle tubes could have the potential to get hung up some
but maybe not too badly :dunno:
Guess I'll wait for your test results to know more.

The thinnest plastic material on the axle
is the material at the center line of the center chunk (pumpkin)

The plastic material outboard of the chunk's center line
is much thicker and IMO could hold up longer when grinding against rocks and such.

Thanks for contributing and with the sharing of your idea "thumbsup"

allanon1965 02-03-2014 08:55 PM

I have already eliminated the wings on my second revision...looking at attachment options now...possibly two ears to attach to longer lower bolts in combination with double sided tape around the center pumpkin...

kool... look forward to seeing your final rendition.
Of course that includes knowing if it holds up !?

Will only hold up to 2s power and Alpha shock angles..that leaves you out:flipoff::lmao:

Re: Axle skid (scuff plate)

Rather than any of the typical materials, what about mixing up some epoxy and applying that? I've been thinking of doing this - inexpensive, no loss of clearance.

allanon1965 02-04-2014 05:03 AM

Actually the epoxy tends to stick to the rocks...it doesnt slide smooth as steel..

Also for it to do any good it would have to be thicker than the .0195-.0300 i am testing out...my steel fabs will be against the housing for negligible clearance loss..

out... is probably better then in ;-)

btw... my FSGT-C lets me dial out some 3s brute...
and allows me to roll slow with you 2s dorks :flipoff:

^ this

besides the added friction probability...
I'm betting that epoxy would not stay secured to the plastic axle material
very well... and would likely separate and fall off.
Epoxy adhesion to some plastic leaves much to be desired, IMO.

metal is better... 'least in my world "thumbsup"

so either your 1:1 axles are made of plastic ?
or you think you're funny

You must buy a new axle every year...
or you don't wheel much on the rocks in your 1:1 world ;-)

bigger tires and high riding suspension systems are not the answer to everything.

basically a stock ifs... but any axle and components still need protection.

Re: Axle skid (scuff plate)

Man o man taco never seen the axle casing with chunk missing like that. I personally use a pretty thick piece of aluminum for protection but it certainly takes away from clearance I'm considering grinding it down some and beveling the edge for smoother slide, tho I must say the aluminum straight gets STUCK atm.
I second the idea of delrin, very tough smooth plastic. Metal will work so long as it resists getting gauges in it from rocks like aluminum, these guages make more surface area for rocks to get caught on, vicious cycle -.-

TacoCrawler 02-04-2014 08:25 PM

Re: Axle skid (scuff plate)

The chunk that is missing is because it wore down thin
and then broke that piece off.

was not from any impact.

I drove it awhile before noticing the diff gear looking at me ! Lol
