Default Liam Zwei

I haven't had a 'basic' SCX-10 for a while, and to be honest, I was missing having one. Enter, Liam (junior). His daddy is here.

I started off with a RTR that I picked up locally. I didn't even hook it up to the juice. I would have, but I don't have any batteries with Tamiya plugs, and I figured if I was going to do any work, it wasn't going to be to make it work as it was. I wanted to get a kit, but there were no kits to be had. No worries though, since I didn't actually pay for the RTR.

I love doing build threads, but this is a little late in the game. I'll keep y'all up to date on mods from here on out. As Liam sits, here's the skinny:

  • RTR Based SCX-10 Rubicon
  • Front Axle
    • Axial AX-10 Aluminum Clockable cHubs
    • Axial AX-10 Aluminum High Clearance Knuckles
    • R2j Steering Linkage
    • Locked Up RC FI Spool
    • Axial HD 43/13 Ring And Pinion
    • Axial CVD Axles
    • Fast Eddy Bearings and HPI Steel Bushings (Where Applicable)
  • Rear Axle
    • Axial Aluminum Lockouts
    • Locked Up RC OT Axle Shafts
    • Locked Up RC FI Spool
    • Axial HD 43/13 Ring And Pinion
    • Shaved Housing with R2j 4-Link Mount
    • Fast Eddy Bearings and HPI Steel Bushings (Where Applicable)
  • Transmission & Motor
    • Super Shafty Beefy Top Tube
    • Super Shafty 6mm Extended Differential Shafts
    • Axial Hardened Transmission Gears
    • Vanquish Products Transmission Case
    • MIP Driveshafts (Stubby's)
    • Robinson Racing 48p 88t 3rd Generation Slipper
    • Axial 48p 20t Pinion
    • Holmes Hobbies 16t CrawlMaster Pro
  • Suspension
    • Proline Scaler Shocks
    • R2j Suspension Links
    • Vanquish Products Shock Hoops
  • Wheels & Tires
    • Motoworx Racing 1.9 6-Spoke SLW Wheels
    • Vanquish Products .350 SLW Hubs
    • Motoworx Racing Scale HD/Lockout Hubs
    • Locked Up RC 4-40 Acorn Nut Screws
    • RC4WD M2 x 5mm Scale Hex Screws (Black)
    • RC4WD 1.9 Compass Tires
  • Electronics
    • Holmes Hobbies Waterproof BRXL
    • Castle Creations BEC @ 7.0V
    • Futaba S9352HV Steering Servo
    • Futaba 4PL Transmitter
    • Futaba SFHSS Receiver
  • Body
    • R2j Kustoms SCX10 Rubicon Sliders
    • Jevne Racing Forward Battery Tray
  • Scale Driver and Passengers
    • Just a couple of goofy looking skater dudes. The passenger looks just like my friend Ryan from Fort Collins.
  • More to come...
The only 'real' customization I've done to it thus far was to raise the fenders for clearance for the monstrous 4.75" RC4WD Compass tires. I'm pretty happy with how it looks.

I'll be taking him out on his maiden voyage this Sunday. It should be fun.

Thanks. My bumpers and winch showed up today. Believe it or not, they are the only parts I bought for this build. Everything else came out of my store inventory. I've tried not to dip into my inventory, but i had to make an exception.

I had to do quite a bit of grinding on the winch body to fit it into the bumper. Also, since it didn't have mounts to work on a SCX-10 chassis, I also had to fabricate a mount. To the untrained eye, it might be mistaken for a stock RTR bumper.

I'll get better pictures later. For now, you'll have to suffer through iPhone photos. Poorly lit iPhone photos at that.

The same is true for the rear bumper as the front. I wanted it to be close to stock. Not sure why, but I feel like staying 'true' to the RTR SCX-10 Rubicon design. Later, I may invert the paint scheme. Time will tell...

I think the next bit on my list may be inner fenders. With the raised wheel arches, it looks REALLY unnatural. I have a Krawler Konceptz JK kit that may come into play later too. Maybe not... The whole point of this build, for me, is to have a 'go to' daily driver. Something that is really reliable. That being said, I may not get too crazy with the scale swag.

RC4WD Tough Armor.

I nearly forgot to mention... I had to shorten the chassis to get the bumper to be flush up against the grill. To do so. I also had to reem out the set holes for the chassis mount to accept M2 hardware. It worked out pretty good. I do t think it's even noticeable.

I'm going to go ahead and call Liam Zwei a success. I built this rig to be reliable, and it is just that: reliable. Ran great for almost four hours strait on the Devils Backbone trail in Loveland Colorado. I would have been out there longer, but the rangers gave us the boot. We're outlaws on public lands... Pretty lame.

I put together a little video. We didn't get a lot of 'good' footage, but we got enough to cut and paste together what you see. There were a lot of people on the trail. I did edit in a cool family that pretended to be Godzilla as they passed through. Pretty funny.

Finally got around to cleaning my rig after the last trail run. I went ahead and installed some inner fenders.

You must have had those for a while. They've been out of stock for soooooo long.

Not so much.... He was cool about it. There is a law stating that no RC's are allowed on public lands. Pretty lame. I don't think that law should apply to crawlers. They aren't dangerous to the public if a moron is behind the stick. He had to walk several miles to get to us. Apparently some guy complained that we were on the trail. We yielded to everyone that day. I wish guys like that had the balls to complain to me instead. At least that way I could have the honor of popping a douche bag.
