Default Trail Honcho , What Pinion ?

Was gonna pick up the rtr ,..It comes with a 21t pinion , I think its gonna be a bit fast ,I see there is a 13, 14 , 15t available , I plan on more crawling /Trail , what is most common or best pinion for moderate crawling, but still fast enough not to have to wait for it on the trail...

The RTR comes with a 20t, at least mine did. The stock motor runs good with it, ever better if you drop to a 16t. Pick up a few pinions at the LHS they are pretty cheap for traxxas ones, Robinson Racing are like a 5 spot and haven't let me down yet!

Robinson Racing Products - The Leader in Gears for RC Cars

I run a 32p 56t spur and a 13t pinion which gives me a 4.3 ratio. I find it pretty good. I think I'm going to try a 15t pinion for a bit more wheel speed. I'm running a 35t HH motor and 2s lipo. Switching to 3s lipo will probably give me the speed I want. I ran a 27t motor and it was about perfect, but it's a cheap can. Mine is for trail running mostly in mixed terrain.

I was kind of guessing the 15t would be the best compromise between speed & good crawling ability, but I dunno I dont really have the experience with it yet , for example ,..is there really that much of a difference between a 14t & a 15t?

My RTR came with a 27T motor and 20T pinion.

I believe a 11T is the smallest pinion that can be installed
utilizing the original 87T 48P spur gear.
^ (edited because I typed 16 instead of 11) oops

I run a 16T 48P pinion with the stock 87T spur.
a 11T pinion is way too slow...
and decreases wheel speed and top end I want.

To gain more power (spelled Torque)...
I run a 3s LiPo...
in combination with a 55T motor.

my top speed... maybe 5 mph
but from 0 - 5 mph, acceleration is brisk
But I rarely use all that power off the line.

A motor with less winds will be faster...
but speed isn't what this chassis is about.
It doesn't really handle well going fast.

Gearing along with the motor's wind will dictate speed.
In other words... volt up and gear down.

So I cant go to a 15t pinion without changing the spur?

The SCX's come with an 87 tooth spur gear that will work with as small as a 12 tooth pinion gear.

The Wraith comes with an 80 tooth spur gear, which will only work with as small as a 17 tooth pinion gear.

I have a crawler biased SCX that is geared 12/87,

and a snow basher SCX geared 20/87

What you run for gearing depends on how fast you want to go verses how precisely do you want it to crawl?

I only need walking speed, I have a short course truck thats so fast you really have to on the ball to control it ,..I want to slow down to a walk & crawl some rocks ,..Im just not sure what pinion I should put on the rtr to achieve this ...

I'm running a 15 tooth pinion on a stock spur gear , and 27 t motor. I like it.

Im happy as heck with the stock set up. Crawls well and has enough wheel speed to "nudge it" over taller stuff. And driving speed really comes down to your trigger finger. Just remember its not all or nothing.

I mistyped
meatmonkey is correct...

11T is the smallest pinion that will work with
the original 87T 48P spur.

sorry about that

one tooth will not really make a noticeable change
two teeth may be noticeable to some.
though I really don't physically notice much difference
but it may effect battery run times and wheel speed.

having either even or odd number pinion gears
should be enough range for most folk.

I have the full range 11T thru 22T
And would only change the pinion gear
If I used a different turn motor.

For my 55T motor... 16T seems to work best for me.

If I were using the stk RTR 27T...
I would likely gear that lower.

Motor temperature is informative
If the motor gets overly hot...
you may want to gear it lower.

I run a 55 turn with 87/17 and a 3 cell lipo, tires are a bit taller than stock. It drives faster then I walk. I like this set up.

14t pinion works well with the stock rig, and mine's still faster than I walk.

I run 17,5t brushless with a Mamba Max Pro and 17/87 gearing.
Great top speed and crawls well
