Default need advice

So I am new to the crawler scene, and I need some advice. I bought an scx10 Deadbolt. I went through and checked ever thing on it, I noticed gear mesh was a little loose for my liking... So I adjusted it, and now the truck seems like it doesn't want to move when being pushed by hand, it runs fine and doesn't have any roll without throttle... is this normal?

I tried searching for an answer, but unfortunately my phone won't let me do the forum search function.

the drive train is engaged with the electric motor always.
the e motor's internal magnets will resist the rotor's turning.
therefore restricting the tire rotation.

the scx-10 is full time 4X

so yes, it is normal

* the gear mesh should not be so tight...
that you cannot feel a slight rocking motion, between each gear cog.
^ This applies primarily to the spur and pinion mesh.

If the spur/pinion mesh were too tight...
it would cause even more restriction to the tires...
and the friction could create excessive heat and melt the spur gear.

that drag could also cause issue with the e motor.

Its simple to do a PROPER gear mesh. Simply make sure there is just a little play room between the spur and pinion teeth, tighten the motor screws after you adjust the mesh and then recheck it afterwards. Or you could do an old trick by taking a small piece of paper, move the gears together and tighten then it should be good to go but still check it again. Adjusting your gear mesh is a MUST never let it get to tight because that will put strain on the motor or under heavy loads it could strip the gears out..yes it will happen. Also, makes sure that your slipper clutch is not too tight or too lose. I recommend mirroring your transmission, this will cut the torque twist in half and the rig will seem much more enjoyable..just search the forums for mirroring the transmission. That's way to much drag, adjust those gears or it will get worse. There are so many mods you can do to this, it's not even funny.lol. Anyways, move your battery up front, lower the body, cut those stupid rubber spacers off on the shocks shafts (this will give much more articulation, change to 4-link in the front and then start upgrading with better parts than stock crappy plastic. Good luck.

A tiny bit of backlash is perfect.

Yeah that's right. I guess it depends on the gearing.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm gonna pick up a few upgrades from work tomorrow. I have a few co-workers that convinced me to buy the deadbolt, so I'll talk to them as well.

Hey my man, one of the easiest ways to set mesh until you get familiar with it is to take a piece of tablet/notebook paper, about 3/8" wide and 3" long (not have to be exact just giving you an idea).

Loosen the motor, slide the paper in between the pinion & spur, push back together & tighten. You should be able to pull the little strip of paper out with out ripping and have a nice accordian looking piece of paper.

The accordion should be crisp or it's a little too loose and if it rips, obviously it's to tight. This is an old school method for 48p (stock Axial) & 64p gears.
