Default build or buy?

I want another scx10 but I'm not sure if I should build one my self or buy a kit.

I think if I was going to pay for a kit I would just buy another wraith kit. But idk, what do yall think?

RTR and add the metal link kit. I got the rtr but swapped out the radio for a 7channel Spekrum I had and use my DX9 radio. I plan on building a kit soon and use the stock radio on that one.

Kit!!!
1-choose radio with 3 or more channels
2-tires that can be used with beadlocks & good foams
3-any motor/esc choice
4-any paint scheme
5-alum links is a plus(better than stock)
6-alum shocks
7-building it is a plus if ya plan to add gears & stuff it's already apart!!!
IMO

Another vote for build.
1 You know all the screws are tight.
2 You know how much grease is in the gears.

In my opnion both are good options. It depends on you. (On your budget and experience level)

I like being able to start with an RTR and mod it as I go. But there is nothing more fun and rewarding than seeing a build progress and come to life.

I vote build. But.....Can't beat the RTR deadbolt @ $299.

I'm with sic1to ^

I like the kits because i can use the 2.4 radio system for my older RC's. I can upgrade the RTR's as needed. Bought a deadbolt and they are very nice, the gearing is real close. Build your own links and add some sticky tires and you are looking real good.

While I understand newbies and RTRs, you are going to be wrenching on it anyway so you might as well get accustomed to the truck and buy the kit so you are familiar with it.

I was brought up with rc in the 80's where everything was a kitset, it taught me a lot and now the only way I would buy an rtr is if I had no other choice. Building kits gives me immense satisfaction and I believe half the fun of owning it is in assembling it.

Plus with axial kits you usually get some better parts included (tyres, links, choice of colour etc) and also you can install your favourite electronics.

Nothing wrong with RTRs, But I can't personally choose one over a kitset.

At the end of the day it is a choice only you can make, and rtr or kit it's another rig in your stable

I've been involved in the rc hobby since it's inception...
and have built many kits and homebrew projects.

still... I'm glad I purchased the RTR.

I still utilize 90% of what electronics came installed.

Anyone that runs these need realize
that maintenance is part of the game.

So I'm sure I have disassembled and reassembled my RTR
more then a few times.

For those whom have little to no mechanical skills...
I'd recommend a kit... that that building skills can be acquired.

But if you've built a kit before...
then the RTR is a good choice...
allowing one to play now...
and alter things... as needed or wanted.

If mechanically experienced and particular about what resides on the chassis...

then I recommend the kit...
and a deep wallet.

regardless of which is chosen...
expect to pay now... and again later
In fact... unless you sell out...
you'll likely toss all your spare change into the black hole.

I really think it comes down to the users wants...

Do you want to play now... and build as you go ? > RTR
or build/spend immediately... and play later ? > Kit

The only problem I have with axial now (and I'm sure we all have the same problem) is that there kits only come with lower aluminum links they used to come with uppers and lowers and they used to come with beadlocks not glue on wheels that's my only bone to pick with axial and it probably will be for ever hahaha.

I bought a rtr a couple years back and I've upgraded and upgraded. But the best upgrade I ever did was aluminum links! I just bought a kit and in my opinion I think building the kit is going to be more fun. You get to know your truck better!

I just went thru this. I have a bunch of track cars and this was to be my first crawler. By the time I added up enough stock parts to build one with most of the popular upgrades I was at $180 in axial parts excluding a body. I bought a deadbolt and sold the electronics for $100 so I'm only in it $200. Cheap enough to start with and add upgrades without breaking the bank.

It also depends on time. I picked up a JK kit, hoping I'd have it built by now, but I have kids, and my youngest is hyperactive, and utterly exhausting, so by the time we get them to bed, I have little creative energy. With the summer quickly passing, getting an RTR Deadbolt seemed like the best chance I was going to have to get out and crawl, before our rainy season hits, not that that will keep me from getting out. I just wanted to enjoy a dry terrain, while we have it, because once it gets wet, here in the fall, it stays wet until spring, pretty much. I'm in the Pacific NW, btw.
I'm glad I got the RTR, because I've been out in the mountains, the past two weekends, running my truck for hours, having a total blast. If I'd waited to build, I probably would've missed the summer season. The OP, of course, already has one SCX10, so it's not like he has no ride. See, now I have a running truck, and have been having fun, so I can now take my time, and get my JK kit built, hopefully before fall. It'll be supplemented with an STRC short wheelbase conversion kit, though, so I can mount my toy RC hard bodies on it.

The lower aluminum links are just fine, you don't even really "need" aluminum uppers right away.

The Axial upper aluminum links suck anyways, they are multi piece (two pieces of tubing screwed together to make the correct length), they don't make the correct size upper links for some reason.

And I agree with you on the glue on wheels, would be nice if they would include their cheap 1.9 beadlocks.

Maybe now that Axial might have some competition with the new Vaterra scaler coming out, maybe they will step up and give us some more option items out of the box.

When your the only game in town, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

BTW, if you have decided on the G6 kit, you will be very happy with it.

Kind of in the same boat.........deciding between the g6 kit or the falken rtr. It is for my 3 1/2 year old son. I have built plenty of kits, but I do like the new electronics, and trying to justify the extra $50 for the falken. If tower would have the deadbolt in stock I would grab that and throw a g6 body on it, but my sons b'day is in sept and don't know if they will get it in stock by then
dam decisions............

Cheers,
Wade

Get a kit for sure. You get a few upgraded parts and choose your electronics. And it's just damn fun to build it yourself. I come from a time (80's) when you HAD to build a rc and I can't imagine not putting one together myself.
