There is a little more to it then just shocks but longer ones will help some. If you angle them so the top side of the shock is more towards the center of the truck that will help out too.

I run the inexpensive Traxxas ( T/E Maxx ) 100mm Ultra XXL big bores.
They can be found/purchased for $ 25. for four (plastic bodied)

If set up properly... they work purdy good.
rebuilding is simple...
and Traxxas BB re-seal cartridge kits are inexpensive as well.

Mine are the original plastic bodied CO's
But they are also available in alloy if one wants that. ( mo' $ ) *
* these are designed differently. so see my later post for more details.

I run the Losi white coil springs (2.75") on mine.

^ there is also a grey 2.75" C spring that Losi offers.
and it is rated lighter ( 1.6lb ) then their white C spring.
part # is likely... 5146

I use the Traxxas cheapo snap in pre-load shims
on mine where wanted.
But pre-load shimming is not a necessity.

Both upper and lower spring seats
fit fine with the Losi coil spring diameter.

I maintain my suspension ride height setting somewhat squat
50/50 up/down travel.

The 2.75" Losi coil springs
have always remained positioned in both their upper and lower seats.

Gravity and time are not consumable friendly...
So... to insure my springs do not settle prematurely...
I always store my rig on a chassis supported stand.

The Traxxas Ultra XXL BB's may not be scale looking to some.
But they aren't excessively over sized IMO.
Regardless... they are worth it, when considering their performance.

here's a look for yerself...

Don't let the snare of tons of articulation grab hold of you! I have found that tons of articulation can be more of a hindrance than an asset. That said I run stock scx10 shocks in both my rigs, with the limiters removed. Enough articulation, but not to much.

I don't want to confuse anyone, but there are two different shocks from Traxxas that are loosely referred to as "big bore" shocks. I believe the shock that Tacocrawler is using is called the Ultra shock and it comes stock on most Traxxas vehicles. The Traxxas Big Bore shock is sold as a replacement shock, although is does come on the Slash 4x4 Ultimate.

In the picture below I lined up three shocks on a 2.2 tire. The shock on the left is an Axial Wraith shock. The shock in the middle is a Traxxas Ultra shock, upgraded with STRC parts. The shock on the right is a Traxxas Big Bore shock.

I agree with Tacocrawler that the Ultra shock is a very capable shock for rock crawling, cheap but very tunable, with plenty of parts available. My advice: go to the Traxxas website and down load the PDF file on this shock to get the right part #'s. The Ultra shock and Big Bore shock are different shocks and the parts do not interchange!

I've always thought the big bores everyone talks about are the non threaded aluminum shocks that come on the T-maxx and such? They are the ones I used on my bully with mini T springs.

Look like these

Although I believe these are just the upgrade to the Ultra Version shocks to be honest.

The traxxas big bores are non threaded aluminum body and caps, the traxxas ultra shocks are non threaded plastic body and caps. You can buy aluminum caps and body's for the ultras, and the ultras have a bigger bore than the "big bores"

yes mine are actually the TRA 3762 Ultra XXL's.
Defined by being black plastic, smooth bodied
with a bladder in the upper cap and a O-ring cartridge at the lower end.
Plastic snap on shims are required...
if any additional pre-load is desired.
Tho' not a necessity if using the Losi coil springs.

These are also produced in a grey bodied version. ^ TRA 3762 A

TRA 4962 are the alloy Big Bores
and utilize a different construction design.
And are produced to offer a supposed upgrade to an alloy bodied shock.
Smooth bodied... but no cartridge on the lower end.

Maybe this link below can help clarify the differences... !?

* Big Bore and Ultra Shocks are Different Sizes! - Traxxas E-Maxx @ URC Forums

either 100mm traxxas shock will work...
But the TRA 3762 Ultra XXL's are easier to rebuild.
And cost less.

* There is a slight diameter difference between
the TRA 3762 and TRA 4962 BB alloys.
Noted in the link above.
This could be a critical difference of how
the Losi coil springs fit the lower seat/cup.

I do not have the TRA 4962 alloy shocks
so I cannot say if the Losi coil springs
will fit the lower seat/cup on those.

I wouldn't run those shocks using the mini T springs...
as compression of the coil springs will limit the shocks travel when compressed fully.
^ would only work on the TRA 4962 Alloy bodied big bores

* The mini T spring use...
would not work on the TRA 3762 Ultra shocks.
As the lower cartridge is flush to the shock's body diameter.

no, and yes they will work.
although I must say there were several different versions of the T-Maxx
since it's inception.
I have the 1st original T-Maxx version...
and those are the shocks that I utilize. (TRA 3762)

google LOSA5147 = 1.8 or LOSA5146 = 1.6

they can be found if ya make an effort.

Oh I called Horizon Hobby...
The only 2.75" Losi spring still being mfgr'd
by LOSI is the 2.0 rated coil spring LOSA5148 (yellow)
Horizon says those are in stock.

Not sure if they would be too stiff...
so guessing it would depend on the weight of your rig.

Locating the white 1.8 or gray 1.6
would require locating old stock.

I'm checking my LHS to see if they can locate/obtain those.
My LHS has one pair of the LOSA5147 in stock...
but two sets would be required.

I'll post up if I can locate those.

Check here... http://www.helidirect.com/losi-275in...te-p-14874.hdx

^ just called them... and they say they have 3 pair left.
get 'dem while ya can

the only LOSA5147's selling on thebay,
that I found... are listing's from the UK.

I'll bet there's plenty of old stock floating around stateside...
Just gotta call up every local hobby store,
to see if they still have some on their shelves.

ie: the heli-direct website...
normally only sells helicopter stuff.
But they once tried including RC cars...
so that's why they have left-over Losi parts.

Guy there was hoping I wanted to buy all their NOS Losi inventory

awrite...

since I'm always seemingly promoting
the use of the low buck Traxxas 100mm Ultra XXL's
and the Losi coil spring, that was used,
has become a discontinued product.

Thought I had better come up with a replacement coil
for these low buck Traxxas Ultra shocks.

Sooo...

Here's an alternative replacement...

ya I know... the package say's "white"
but instead... they're black !? ~they do have white paint markings tho'~

...it's equally rated at 1.8 and coil ID/length fits the Ultra's perfectly.
The spring's over-all length is maybe 2mm longer.
So maybe the actual spring rate would be technically higher
guessing 1.82 - 1.84... can't say fer sure.

Should work for the replacement NOS LOSA5147 white 1.8 coils.

I think black looks better anyways.

something to note

the Traxxas 100mm Ultra XXL Shock installed to a lightweight SCX-10 chassis may not be the best choice
unless lighter weight coils could be found.

This spring rate works well on my rig.
weighing in at around 9-10 lbs
^ incl. weighted wheels and beef tubed axles.
and home made Fr/Rr bumpers, sliders plus electronics.

so these will work well for my circumstance.
And should suffice for rigs weighing 8-10 lbs

Are the stock springs on these traxxas shocks too stiff im guessing??? Cause ive considered this for a while now buying a set of t maxx shocks so I have 8 shocks to do both of my scx10s.. so ill need these losi springs ??? Are the stock t maxx shocks the right ones to use with the 1.8 rate losi springs??? 3 questions I know but just want to be sure on all 3 questions....
