Just another Honcho trying to blend in as a Toyota...

Greetings, just wanted to share my SCX-10 Honcho.
My first "real" RC, I usually build 1:1 vehicles. Got into these for something to do while recovering from surgery. My buddies got wraiths, which helped edge me into this world.
I've been lurking here trying to learn, finally going to share my truck with you.
I was hoping being "scale" the addiction would be "scale". Well I was wrong.

Started out as a RTR Honcho.
Modified a proline floor pan and a dinky interior, I hated being able to see in the wheel wells and out the windows.
Painted it, put lights inside the body instead of that ugly bumper.
Steel Stinger with winch, Steel rock sliders, alum links, home made alum CMS
Then we have a few shots from a Canadian "trail" day.

Shaved the mounts off of the tube frame in the rear.

Kept one and used it to mount a filler tube for the fuel cell.

Bent up a bracket from some stainless. Used some tubing, couple of bike cable ends, and part of a rivet to make this fuel filler tube

Picked up some SSD D60 axle housings.
Got them installed and out for a test rip.

I like how you dropped right in with an update, after a 2 yr void, as if it were a week.

Didn't feel like much more than a week on my end.

She has been going strong, not much to report.

Would like to swap out the beadlock rings for something with more bolts, anyone know of any besides the Lockeduprc Agile? Would like black.

Locked up rings with black spray paint? Just saying...:lmao: But seriously, LURCs wheels/ rings are fking sweet.

I love the body. You didnt go over the top with the leds, just simple and clean. Always wanted to do up a custom one for my honcho. Is it matte on the outside? And where'd you get the side mirrors and windshield wipers?

My rtr 'taco:

Thank you, mine started out a RTR just like yours, I got the new body because it came with light buckets and I really like the LED mounted in the body look.

Side mirror and wipers are Axial AX80038 "exterior detail parts tree"

I mounted them by drilling small holes and inserting the mirror arm into the body and gluing on the inside. The look was right but I have since ripped the drivers side off during a roll over. So i'm working on a new mount for the mirror using copper wire. More on this to follow.

So this was my first attempt at a lexan body. I did many different colours on outside and inside for the look I wanted.

So I started with some PS-14 Copper for some areas where rust and scratches may form. This was on the inside of the body.
Then I layed down some PS-16 Metallic blue on the outside.
Next was some PS-53 Lame Flake, for some extra glitter and metallic look
Followed by a light coat or two of TS-53 Deep Metallic Blue.
I hit the inside with some TS-16 Mica Silver,
Then backed with black so the over all finish look of the inside was black.

Once the outside had the right shade of blue mix I laid down some PS-55 Flat clear.

Well finally put a shirt on. Now maybe I can get a slurpee from 7-11 in peace.

Hit up the RC DMV and got the truck registered and legal. No more trailer queen.

Cool project to pass the time while healing. It turned out great man. From the character of your build I would have to guess that your 1:1 is a Tacoma.

They are the stock axial buckets that come with the un-cut honcho body.
Axial Racing - Axial Trail Honcho Truck Body - .040" uncut (Clear) - Body Only

I trimmed them out, drilled for 3mm and 5mm led's using Axial led bucket caps and glued that all in, painted them a dark chrome and glued them on.

Yea it worked out well, i'm pretty happy with how it's coming together.
Good guess, I've got a 2001 Tacoma. I'm up to 3 Toyotas right now, so I suppose that's where the little truck got it from.

I like how you cut the styrene diamond plate away from the tubing area. I want to do the same, however haven't thought through how to mount rear part of the body to the towers since stock way uses the styrene as a mounting point.

How did you do it?

Do you have any pics of the floor pan?

Thanks.

Found a picture of how I did the light buckets, and took a few shots to answer some questions.

I used 1/4" "P" clamps attached to the rear frame brace. This did two things for me, lets me get rid of the rear lexan diamond plate, and lets me be able to pivot the body up for quick battery change instead of having to fiddle with those hard to reach rear clips.
Well 3 things I guess because I mounted a jack and shovel to the old body post mount holes.

Floor pan is a proline floorpan made for the SCX10. This was before axial had their own, which looks better. I had to cut a lot from the front of the floor pan, there is some where forming that looks like it may be for a weird sideways front battery. Any way, I like to run my trucks low and my front tires rub on this piece.

Not perfect but works for me, got rid of the dreaded see through truck look, velcro on the side pieces lets me mount my interior.

Re: Just another Honcho trying to blend in as a Toyota...

Have not been doing much to her these days.

But I did finally finish my tire chains I started last winter. Found a better way to do them by nailing them to some plywood to hold the chain while I work.
Finished off with some scale bungee cords to keep tension.

http://www3.telus.net/devenstone/Min...ition=download

Also decided to try out a 35T motor up from the stock 27T.
Might need to go back to the 20t pinion from the 15t I was running on the 27T motor.

http://www3.telus.net/devenstone/Min...ition=download

Have a few more things in the mail that I finally pulled the trigger on. I'll get those posted once they are installed.
