Axial has a neat little light controller box that plugs into your rx.

I've done this a couple different ways. I've soldered Traxxas battery connectors right to the wires coming off the lights. The other way has been using a very small lipo with connectors pictured below.

The small 2s runs this light bar for about an hour. The 2000 mili 2s runs rock lights for a few hours..

Bumper lights front and rear run off main battery..

If you're going to use a second dedicated lipo for lights only, you won't have any low voltage protection. You'll run the risk of over discharging the second lipo and damaging it.

That's why you get a low voltage warning thingy. They have ones that light up, make a sound or both. I got one from hobbyking.

This: HobbyKing™ Cellmeter-6 Lipo/Life/Li-ion Cell Checker & Alarm

But pretty much any one of these will do as long as it's compatible with the battery.

Or you run everything off one lipo. Then you don't need a separate low voltage alarm. I run everything off one 3s lipo. I'm using one of Heyok's light controllers plugged into my 3rd channel on my receiver.

+1 on the low voltage alarm.
If you're gonna run a second lipo dedicated for lights, I would definitely use a low voltage alarm of some sort!

The only reason I got one is for my Bulldog winch that needs a second battery. I'll probably run my lights off the same battery as the bulldog and leave my light bar where it is running off the main battery.

For one of my light bars I just use a 9 volt battery. I don't worry about low voltage; it's easy to replace. But for my other lights running off a small 3S, I should have an alarm?

If it isn't connected to the esc then yes. If it's connected to the esc, the esc's low voltage gut off is fine. It's when you don't have the battery connected to anything but lights or a winch, which don't have low voltage cut off's, that you need an alarm.
