I've got the 4.0" with standard inners and firm outers for the rear and medium outers for the front. Haven't tried them outside yet, it's too wintery out there.

Bought some VW engine stl files from printable-3d-models.com. Looking into the idea of printing me one of these to throw into the back of the Bug. Have to scale it down from 1/5 scale but that's easy enough. It may or may not happen depending on time and cost.

Cheers eh,

Todd

As the owner of an ACVW and a 3D printer, thanks for that link!

Have you already purchased the files? I'm just a wee bit wary about the site.

Yup, bought them. No problems. Paid with PayPal.

Since I never seem to unlock the diffs I spent 20 bucks and got two Traxxas diff lockers from RPP. Here's the rear all locked up.

Just did the front as well. Perfect fit. There was lots of grease from the factory inside both ends when I opened them up. Might help that I don't drive the thing like a submarine.

Found a sound module with Beetle sounds. Hadn't thought of it much earlier but this would sound cool. https://www.beier-electronic.de/mode...W%20Kaefer.mp3

Cheers eh,

Got the single speed, non diff locking chassis back together. It looks naked.

Got some parts from Shapeways today. Going to have to figure out how to paint and wire this engine and mount the roof rack. The VW emblem I've got figured out already.

Cheers eh,

Todd

Found a fan belt. A tiny black rubber band.

Wow that motor is impressive! Did you print that? If so, which printer and filament are you using?

Nope, had it printed at Shapeways. My printer isn't good enough for this. There are over 70 individual parts to print but I threw them all together - well, most of them - and sent it off to Shapeways to print as one piece. Since they use laser sintering there's no support material and it makes it possible to do in one go.

I thought it was Shapeways. Still, it's very cool.

Playing around with an idea for wiring the engine. This is heat shrink tubing and some 24 gauge silicon wire. What do you think? Is the wire too thick? Maybe I ought to try a smaller diameter wire.

Well I think I've answered my own question. I tried some smaller beading wire that was lying around and used two different diameters of heat shrink tubing to make the rubber boot on the distributor. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Now that bit's figured out I need to see how to mount the engine. To the frame or to the body? It's got to sit low enough to look right but not so low that it gets ripped off by the first rock it encounters. It'll need a skid plate. This is a bit high me thinks.

I can’t wait to see the finished product. I’ve been watching your Bug evolve for a long time.
