Newbie. Ordered CRC ScX10 rtr and SCX10 jeep kit.

Get guys I'm not a total newbie to rc but I am to crawling. I have a couple SCT's and copters. I always wanted a crawler especially the jeep unlimited when I saw it a few years back. So now i have two coming. One for my 13yr old daughter and the kit for me. My question is can I use some of my short course electrics (rs and 13.5) or am I better off getting something brushed. We will mainly be just cruising in the empty lot next to our house maybe film with a go pro.

Your main problem with going brushless will be breaking parts. The transmission gears will probably be the first to go and then your driveshafts. I would personally kep the SCX brushed. You can find some pretty inexpensive setups. Of course Holmes Hobbies make some of the best electronics as far as crawling goes. I would definitely look into Holmes Hobbies.

IMO...

you're going to want to change things...

a crawler does better with a drag brake capable esc.

and higher wind motors (35T - 55T) will net smoother control.

ignore brushless esc's/motors...
brushed motors work best for crawlers...
especially when submerged.

and lastly...

A 3s LiPo is less boring then 2s LiPo (yeah LiPo's work best)

^ torque is more valuable then rpm

No you don't need a mega $ 60c LiPo rating for a crawler.
25c - 30c will do.

Mah (capacity) is up to you...
but the higher mah rated LiPo's
tend to be heavier and larger.

I feel a 3s 2200mah is an acceptable compromise.

Tho' I sport two of those wired parallel (saddle pak duals @ 4400mah)

^ mounted atop my sliders

You'll be fine with the 13.5 brushless with what you're planning to do, I ran a 10.5 in the Dingo. It will certainly give you time to get a feel for the truck to decide if you need/want more power, more speed, etc..

Thanks! I will be building the kit slowly. I want to make a replica of my old 2011 JKU I traded last year. I'll be running the rtr with my daughter and use it as a tester of sorts. If I'm good with the stock parts I'll get something along those lines. I don't have an endless budget like some. I just want to build a nice reasonably capable rig. Not the best and not the worst.

Brushless setups are nice but pretty expensive to do them right, then you have to worry about waterproofing and building the rig to withstand that kind of power. Save yourself from the headache and just get you a nice Brushed Setup, that way you'll have less money in it starting out, you won't shred as many parts and you'll be able to blast through a puddle without cringing. As stated above 3s 2200mah is a solid LiPo for run time.

Thanks guys. I already have a 2s 4000mah laying around. I'll be using it until I can get a couple of saddles. What esc should I be looking at?

Holmes Hobbies makes probably the best Brushed ESC on the market. Its around $109 for the waterproof version and $99 for the non-waterproof version.

Everything arrived at around 11:00. My daughter is anxious for me to get out of work so she can start driving her new Jeep. I need to change out the connector to deans first though. My kit came in too. I'm going to try and read all I can so I can build it smarter and perform the mods as I build instead of doing it twice. Anything I should do besides the lockers and mirror tranny mod?

I put a Tamiya Sport tuned in my first SCX10, plus a larger pinion(went up 2-3 teeth from stock), and ya it had wheel speed I wanted but was uncontrollable in corners, IE it fell over, and 3 wheeled a lot - would barely crawl.. that was on 2S power

I have 45t's in my 2 current trucks and like them, but I feel a 35t is perfect.. Once RC4WD gets more TF2 Hilux's I plan to buy the Tekin 30t combo for it..

I'm trying to find a second car for my son and daughter to share as well. Tough on a budget

Finally got some time away from work and started the build on my kit. I was able to build the front axle tonight and hope to get some more done tomorrow. Thinking about using some electronics I have laying around for now just so I can get out there along with my daughter. She has a rtf crc scx10, it's pretty nice for a retro.

Like you said your not a newbie,so if i were you use what you have on hand and then go from there.Just be easy on the throttle. There lots of great info on here to get you going in the right direction, check out the electronic thread.
Plus there not one crawler on here that are alike. So your will be different. "thumbsup"

I'm not a newbie when it comes to the hobby. Just to crawlers. I got to work on it again today. Made good progress. Its a roller. Now I started thinking about the tedious things such as the paint and if I should leave the wheels black along with the bumpers and roll cage. I'm going to wait for a proper speed control and motor for now. I can see this taking a while and a pile to compete. For now we are having fun with the rtr. I need to find somewhere to go and see what these things can do.
