| Project Ugly Duckling
Well, guess it is time for another SCX10 build. For this one I am going to use a neglected and unloved SCX I picked up in the early spring. Once you see the pics you will see why I call it Ugly Duckling. I don't think this poor thing was ever cleaned, it has layer after layer of dirt and grime caked on it. The tires are mismatched and all the plastic links are bent or warped. So far the only damage looks to be a cracked shock tower. The drive train rotates smoothly so that is a plus. Plan is to tear it all apart, clean and inspect everything. Then back together it goes. Going to be a back up/extra truck so going to keep it pretty simple. AE5 with a 27t axial, axial 1.9 beadlocks with RC4WD Baja Claws. Prob get a FlySky radio. For a body, going to more than likely go with a Proline Yota cab and Honcho bed. Course at any point the whole plan could derail and go a whole new direction ;) Onto some pics. So dirty..... Hard to believe it spins smoothly. Was told this servo worked, if it does I will keep it. More to come soon. Thanks for looking. -Prime- . |

LOL @ Scale pressure washer! That's what is needed. BTW: I have a post in the Wanted section looking for a Honcho bed (Found one ) Well I got this dirty truck tore apart and over all still looks to be in pretty good shape other than the layers of dirt. The pile of dirty parts. You can see how bad the links are bent in this pic. So much dirt.......... The bumper has a small tear in the middle of the top and the tow hooks are mangled. Not sure yet if I am going to fix this bumper or get a slightly bigger one. Now we start the cleaning process. Going to be a lot of scrubbing in my future. Stay tuned, more to come!! -Prime- . Got the frame cleaned up and reassembled. It was in really good shape under the dirt, just some surface rust on the screws but I am fine with that. When I trimmed the brace for servo clearance I went ahead and trimmed it by the frame so it is ready to go if I decide to go the CMS route. Next up? Fix the shock tower and tackle the axles. Thanks for looking. -Prime- . |

Nice reclamation project. With all of the attention focused on the SCX10 II and Ascender, it's easy to forget how good an OG SCX10 can be with just a bit of work. I started a moderate overhaul of mine and have been really happy with the results. Keep it up! |

I got a little bit of work completed. Fixed up the broken shock tower. In the future I plan to upgrade the towers on Cheapbolt. When I do, this truck will get it's hand-me- down towers. Here is the broken tower and washer I plan to use to fix it. Started off by super gluing the broken parts together. Then used 5-minute epoxy to fix the washer to the back of the tower. And gave the front a light coat. Mounted up. Believe this should hold nicely. Next up, going to tackle the axles. Kind of affraid of what I am going to find in there. Stay tuned for more. Thank you for looking. -Prime- .

With any luck you won't find a little eco-system in them. Can't wait to see where you go with this |

No eco-system in the axles, but it is close.... Cracked open the front axle and the inside looks about how I expected it too. The grease has become a nice thick paste, but atleast it has some grease in it. lol Luckily it all cleaned up very well. The gears looked great. Even the bearings were salvageable. Now everything has a nice think coating of marine grease and is back together and rotating very smoothly. Also cleaned up the servo, haven't tested it yet though. Also added a set of metal upper and lower links from the parts bin to the axle. Keeping the y/three link for now. I also put the plastic steering links back on for now. Will make some metal ones once I decide if I am sticking with the servo on axle or going CMS. Next up is to tackle the rear axle and make some links for the rear. Going to shoot for about a 13" wheelbase. Thanks for looking. -Prime-

Got the rear axle cleaned up. Looks pretty good, inside and out. One small mark on one of the ring teeth but it looks more like a casting flaw rather than a wear mark. So gonna roll with it and see what happens. It is looking more like a truck. The rear axle is back under the truck. I went through my extra links and found some that worked so I got out of making a set. The ones I went with was some left overs from an old TXT-1. It put the wheel base right at 13" exactly. Next up is to get the transmission cleaned, lubed, and reinstalled. -Prime- |

This is always my fear when buying used RC's (which I have only done once, a Savage Flux XL slider) is that they are poorly maintained. It is amazing how badly some people treat their things. Looks like you are doing a good job saving this one though.

Luckily going into this one I expected the worst and so far it has turned out better than expected. Not going to lie, I trade for and buy a lot of used RCs and it is always scary.

| Re: Project Ugly Duckling I spent months procuring parts for a major overhaul and upgrade of my SCX10 Jeep Rubicon, and then Axial came out with the SCX10 II. I initially felt like I'd wasted time and money, but then realized how silly that was, since I've been quite content with the SCX10. It's not like they're worthless or anything.

Got time to get the tranny cleaned up. Here is a reminder of how nasty it looked before I started on it. Tore it apart. The grease was a bit "chalky" but overall the guts were in good shape. So I just cleaned it all up and gave it a healthy coating of marine grease. All back together and looks like a different transmission. The one drive shaft has some groves in it but they are not as deep as they look so I think it will be ok for now. This one will not have brushless power for a while I bet. And back in the truck. Stock a Axial 27t in it for now. I thought I had a 18T pinion but could not find it, or any other pinions for that matter save one. So I stuck the one I had in it for now. It is a 12T pinion. Going to give it a try but pretty sure going to be ordering up a pinion after the first test drive. My wife thought I was a little crazy for bringing this nasty dirty truck home but now she is starting to really dig it and can't believe it is in as good of shape as it is under all the grime. Next up? Shocks, then tires/rims. So much more to come. -Prime- |
