Johnny builds a scrap Dingo

A while back I built a Ford Courier for my Dad. It was built around a Dingo kit and the old Pro Line body I managed to find hiding out in Australia.

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...ier-build.html

Did I need another SCX-10? No, I suppose not. But, I had always liked the Dingo body (especially with a plastic grill). And I didn't have a 11.5" wheelbase SCX-10. And I had some leftover axle parts. And electronics. And some episodes of Columbo to watch...

Peter Falk made me build a scrap Dingo.

The axles were from my G6 Wrangler that I put SSD axles on. Mostly stock parts. Over-driven front axle.

Picked up a salvage yard Falken chassis as a base.

Added the Dingo Kit bumpers and some Axial links I had picked up at one point.

I had some spare RPM knuckles. Those will do.

Formerly, and likely presently, leaky shocks from my old kit. They were rebuilt to try to minimize the leaking and the episode of Columbo wasn't over and I'm a glutton for punishment.

Leftover bucket o' lights. Some things bolted on. There's not a lot of room for the axle mounted servo on these 11.5" wheelbase rigs. I remember that from the Courier build. I decided to try this little Spektrum servo. It's cute. And shiny.

The old motor from my G6 Wrangler got some new brushes. The speed control is a HobbyWing brushed unit from when I rebuilt an old RC-10L pan car. I put the speed control that came with my CC-01 FJ Cruiser into the RC-10L so I could use the HobbyWing here.

I definitely wanted some RC4WD Landies on this build. I thought Trail Busters would look great, but the old rubber scared me off. The Genius Sem Limites have a similar look and are super sticky.

But will it drive? Maybe.

Cool pile of parts coming together and I love watching old Columbo! Looking like a very sensible build. 8)

First trail run was a 1.5 mile outing. It was cold. Nothing broke. Success!

More success! Still cold. Still not broken. Another 1.5 miles or so logged. I'm liking the short wheelbase. Even with the dogbones up front it's able to maneuver pretty well.

I like toy trucks.

Oh, I forgot to mention a couple of other pieces that went into this rig. In no particular order (except the one in which they fell out of my brain): Crawler Innovations Deuces Wild foams, lots of LEDs powered by HeyOK and Axial light controllers, Castle BEC and the Reign RC grille.

OK. Bye.

Fantastic build, and I totally appreciate the scale photography. Man, the Dingo is one of my favorite SCX10 models! I started one last summer, using a Deadbolt pre-roller chassis, but ended up shelving it. I'm going to try and get it done this month, because they just seem fun to watch, lumbering down the trail.

Tiny truck is trucking well. We had a stretch of warmish days and frigid nights, which means a lot of ice on the trails. The little Genius tires have been the cat's meow.

Here are some more photos since johnnyluv said nice things about the photos and I already have them in the post.

Re: Johnny builds a scrap Dingo

The scrap Dingo has its first 10 miles under its belt. It still works! The shocks are even holding (most of) their oil (for now). I must not be trying hard enough to break it. I'll do better (worse) next time.

Also, those little Genius tires continue to impress me.

Enough yappin'! Who wants ice cream?! I mean pictures. Who wants pictures?

Re: Johnny builds a scrap Dingo

I'm just here to mention how upset I am that Columbo isn't on Netflix anymore. I sat down to work on some tiny trucks this past Saturday night only to find that Peter Falk's iconic, trench-coated detective had been scrubbed from the listings. Where else will I be able to find a seemingly endless parade of '70s celebrities committing murder and thinking they'll get away with it? Spoiler alert: they won't. There's a reason they're "co-stars". Columbo is always a step ahead.

While I'm here...

To be fair, most of the parts you can see in the photos (body, bumpers, lights, etc) I had around but had never been used. The wheels and tires were new. Most of the "well loved" parts (axles, sliders, motor, etc) are tucked underneath.

Re: Johnny builds a scrap Dingo

My 10 year-old has taken quite a liking to the scrap Dingo. It's become his go-to rig for our little adventures. As a result, I've gotten to see how well the tires perform in mud. The answer is very well. Even packed full of yucky stuff they still found traction. They also clean out a lot better than the Axial BFG KO2s.

Oh, and GMade scale hubs!

Thanks! Due to a series of events outside of anyone's control, that Courier hasn't been run very much. I'm hoping to change that this spring. I think the little blue Ford would look good on the trails with the scrap Dingo.
