Default Allanons Winter Build Project-- 77 Scout SCX10

I bought a SCX10 based Scout off the classifieds, it arrived today in a pretty beat up box via USPS. The body was split at the left rear corner but otherwise not too bad.

The rest of the rig however was pretty rough. I noticed it had VP 8* knuckles and chubs on it (which I absolutely despise, axial high clearance knuckles and chubs work much better) but the chubs were on the wrong sides causing the axle to pitch forward quite a bit. The front axle housing also was pitched forward a lot which aggravated the bad caster angle even more.

Its part of buying a used rig without asking questions, my bad lol... I was going to tear it down anyway so its not too much of a problem. It came with a spectrum dx2 tx and a spectrum rx that doesnt function at all, light wont light up no matter what I do. I put in a flysky temporarily to get it running with my flysky tx.

The front diff hops alot, even after correcting the pinion angle so I will have to tear down the diff to see whats up, again I was planning on doing that anyway to the diffs and trans.

I mainly jumped on this rig for the scout body, its rough but not too bad, the crack in the left rear corner I will fix over the winter.

I have 1.55 stompers on white steel wagon wheels rght now but I will be going to the 1.9 wild peaks on gmade steelies that I used on my 6x6. These look the part for this rig...

I swapped the shocks out for aluminum bodies ones, it had big bores on it and the fronts had springs that had been cut, they kept kicking out of the seats.. so I took them off. It also has MIP drive shafts but they are pretty worn out and will be getting switched out for JunFac drive shafts.

I also found it had a 35t HH TM Expert ran by an old axial esc with a BEC and a waterproof hitech servo. The esc looks to be an AE-2. It works fine for what it is.

It also came with the battery plate behind the front wheels and that will be changed out to my preferred saddle pack style of lipos in parallel, about 2600mah 3s x2.

I tore down the front diff and found the ring gear well worn, with some teeth beginning to chip off, I replaced it and the pinion gear with new stock ones I had. I am going to put on dingo links to get the wheels more in the center of the fender wells and probably stay with the 1.55 stompers and wagon wheels...

the trans had steel gears, but the bottom gear is for an AX10 rather than the SCX10 thru hole style. I will change that later.

I still have some round stock left over from making the front bumper on my 6x6 so I will make front and rear bumpers for the Scout.

I put in an order for a set of the Goodyear MT/R 1.9 tires in the 4.19 variety, they should do well on this rig and keep it class 1 legal. I will be putting CI Lil Nova 2 stage foams in them and mounting them on the gmade steel beadlocks that currently have my wildpeaks on them.

Good score on the body. I haven't been able to find a second one. Dingo flares worked for me to hide comp cut fender wells.

thanks for the tip, I want to put the same tamiya light buckets in that you did, they just look like they were designed for the scout!

I have the Tamiya light buckets and lenses ordered and on the way, I bought some aluminum sliders off the classifieds last week and they came today, they look like they were made for the scout! I am still waiting on a flysky RX to get here, the one I have is glitching out every so often. I have the goodyear MT/R 4.19 variety with CI lil nova foams on the way from RPP. I will keep the gmade steel wheels I have on now since they look almost identical to the OEM 1:1 steel wheels...

got my torch, solder and brass stock out today to build a prototype rear bumper for the Scout...turned out decent enough, simple design...now to beat on it and see how durable it will be.

I added a second brass tube to the rear bumper to give it a beefier look..pics when I get home, but it looks much better! Also tossed on a set of original non xl rock beasts on axial bead locks until my goodyears get here.

I always get hosed on ordering from RPP...my order was shipped monday, supposed to be delivered yesterday (friday) and still isnt even in town yet.. USPS only screws up my orders from RPP..I dont understand it at all...

Just ordered another slate 2850kv sensored motor for the scout this time... already have the MMP... This should be a very good compromise for the money.

Nice job on that bumper. Keep us posted on the durability.

That sucks for you with RPP orders. They usually deliver in 2-3 days for me everytime.

The second tube really sets the bumper off, good work.

well the order from RPP finally showed up, and the damn tires rub on the VP 8* chubs/knuckles...god how I hate those damn things! I ordered the axial high clearance knuckles and adjustable chubs so I can finally put these new tires on. (i have a set of 8mm spacers on already and they still hit)

I will post up pics when I get home tomorrow..the MT/R's on the gmade steel wheels really look good on the Scout! Next thing I am going to do is the dingo flares to make it better to look at!

I love that body! Proline needs to re-release this one...

I've got a new CGR one sitting here that I'd like to build up. It's so narrow though, I'm not quite sure what to do with it. Yours looks pretty nice overall on the Axials.

I got my tamiya light buckets done today, did the Scout and my baja bug as well. I am out of white LEDs at the moment, but I was sure I had some. Must have ate them or something lol... here are the pics and they make all the difference in the appearance of the Scout.

Also test fit the Goodyear MT/R tires on the Gmade Steelies... as soon as my high clearance knuckles and adjustable C-hubs get here they will be on permanently. I think they are a perfect fit for the size I looking for.

The one thing I find interesting is that this is a 77 scout body with the late 60's scout 800 tail lights and not the 77 scout tail lights..

Unfortunately RC bodies frequently have these issues. Even with the current scale-craze perfect detail isn't always a priority, especially when compared to the sales that can be made by simply making it look cool. When dealing with older shells, this is even more of an issue. It's really too bad.

got some parts in today, the castle slate 2850, the axial high clearance knuckles and axial adjustable c-hubs... still waiting for the LED bulbs to light up the headlights. I got the Goodyear MT/R tires on and they look great!
