Transmission gears

I just bought some metal gears for my transmission. I noticed when I got home that the idler gear is hardened steel and the bottom diff gear is hardened aluminum. The brand is Robinson racing.... is this a good combo or should I get the hardened steel bottom diff?

The aluminum gear will be fine for a long time.

Will the steel gear cause wear on it? Probably.

If the gears are kept clean and lubed, the bottom gear should last years before a replacement is needed. Even when the teeth on the aluminum gear are worn, it is still unlikely the gear will completely fail.

I use the Hot Racing brand of steel 3 geared transmission no problems

It is the smaller plastic gear that shreds in the transmission, followed by the spur.


If you are running any combination of aluminum and metal gears you shouldn't have to worry. Of coarse if you get in a bind, and have a locked slipper something will have to go.

Stock gears are ok. My 9t brushless mudder couldnt take it though! Yeah racing gears now and a brushed motor and we are all happy !

Well cant say I have ever heard of HARDENED ALUMINUM gears. Most aluminum have alloys in them to make them perform better than bare aluminum. Aluminum can be hardened but it gets very brittle. With that said, the transmission gear that is aluminum is pretty good size and should be able to hold up against tha steel. It is the smaller gear that tends to wear or break the easiest. Without lubrication on the gears if they were all the same material they will chew each other up pretty quick. Harened gears can take more pressure and more heat and wear is minimal with lubrication. What you have should be fine unless you are running large tires and get in a bind without letting up.
