Default YB's original SCX-10 build

It's been almost 12 years since Axial released the original SCX10 (AX90007) Kustom Retro kit. It's time to build a mostly stock "vintage" scx like the first one I had back in late 2008. This first pic is just the original box art.

I built and bought one of those back in the day, wish I still had it! Do you still have that body?

I do actually have an original body, I've been hoarding it for 5 years just for this particular project!

Starting with the axles. That's actually the original manual from my very first scx10. I've probably built 30 scx based trucks over the last decade and can assemble these axles in my sleep, but it's still fun to flip through the nice drawings in the manual.

I put some old UD gears in the rear axle along with a HR spool. I was going to run these old HPI gears in the front axle, coulda sworn they worked in axial housings, but the ring gear didn't want to work with the plastic diff case/iron cross locker. So the front axle is getting OG cast ring & pinion.

It’s a shame they don’t make that body anymore, I don’t know if I could bring myself to even use it lol, I just redid an old Original Honcho kit not too long ago, really brought back some good memories.

Put the chassis together. It's important to note that these frame rails are wrong. These are 10.2 rails with extra holes and different markings than the earlier scx10 chassis. If someone has an original set of rails, I'm interested.

Also notice the manual calls for a "backwards" skidplate/motor on the driver's side. Wonder why they did that? Everyone immediately turned it around it seems.

Damn Potter, I was just digging through my boxes of "spares" to give Bob a Ax-10 front housing.. It reminded me of all of the rigs and fun times we've had over the years with these trucks.

Maybe we should do a retro "spec" class for a Bob Rocks event, just to have fun the way we used to.

Hey Walt! It really has been a blast of a hobby and those early days were great. I miss the 2.2 ax10 local comp days around 2007ish.

Built the transmission tonight, I love opening this old packaging. This is an early VP housing with the little gel dot logo. Modern Vanquish stuff is really really nice but I swear the old stuff is even nicer.

Axial green spacers and an Integy 35t lathe motor just feel right. I have better motors sitting here but who wasn't running a lathe motor in 08?

Built some shocks and links tonight. The original SCX and maybe the honchos came with TiN coated shafts and dual rate springs. I believe everything later didn't. I had forgotten about this model, she was hiding in the link instructions. Fine print says her name is "Expensive Cookie" lol.

I've always hated stacking two links to make a longer link, but that's what the instructions called for in the rear, so it happened.

A complete slider now, time for electrics install. Good ol' HS-645, v2 Castle sidewinder, and a DSM 2 sr3100 spektrum Rx.

I'm impressed you have an SV2 that still functions. I mustache let the smoke out of at least six of those before swearing them off. I waited till the SV3 was on the market for a year till I tried one I was so leery.

Any chance you'd want some og 1.9 Flatirons off of my first scx10?

I love the axial scx10 platform, something about the old school vibe. I started on a scx10 and that is what I still drive, though not much left of original truck

Thanks guys, collecting parts for this and building from my original manual has been a blast.
She's a roller now! Fresh flatirons and axial 8 hole beadlocks. I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY looking for a set of the original green beadlock rings. If anybody has a set I'd happily buy them from you!!

I usually paint my own bodies but I wanted this one to be right. I had Soots paint this one mostly because I can never get chrome to come out just right. I wouldn't call it perfect but I'm very happy with how it turned out. Can't wait to get it out on the trail for some action shots!
