Default SCX10 original resurrection

Back when I first joined RCCrawler.com, I had an original SCX10 kit. I'd completed most of the build then, but needed to complete the electronics. Life got in the way, followed by a move and then kids. Recently, my son asked about the cars he saw in the basement and inspired me to get the stuff running again.

I finished getting the electronics setup in the older SCX10 and added a pinion/spur cover to it from a later revision as I'm letting my 5 year old son drive this one. I also picked up an SCX10.3 kit and have it in roughly the same pre-body state as the SCX10 original. I thought it interesting to see the 2 kits side by side, both essentially brand new.

My SCX10.3 has some customization in so far as the transmission has been painted to look like metal instead of the stock black. Still need to paint the motor covers. But comparing the two, it's pretty clear all the tweaks over the years. Much more scale detail on the new version, including full fenders. The pumpkin looks more detailed and is smaller on the new kit. The stock tires are wider and taller than the original SCX10 kit. Of course CMS servo on the new one vs the axle mounted original. Drive shafts have a less severe angle to centerline of truck on the new kit and look more scale.

As I started in the hobby back in the 80s with a Tamiya Frog kit, it's fun to see just how much it has changed over the years, even in just the crawler end of the hobby.

Greetings from Brazil...

You made me think now... I am getting old and so is my SCX10. I have a first generation Trail Honcho that originally came with the FM radio, ESC with no drag brake, all plastic links etc.... Its around 10 years old now...lol... my daughter has a SCX10.2 and my wife a Traxxas TRX4 Sport kit.

My Honcho still running strong after all this years of abuse with the Teking eletronics and Axial replacement metal links, besides that and a 2.4 radio everything else is 100% original on it.

Brgds

The 10.1 are a great kit.

I have all three SCX10 models, and each have their own driving style.

The 10.1 with its large axle centers and lower ground clearance is more of a pick your line so you'll clear kind of rig and wheel speed is usually your friend for getting over obstacles. ( it also has the stock electronics in it ) and has the turning radius of an aircraft carrier.

The 10.2 is more point and go with more steering, articulation and axle clearance but is a bit on the top heavy side. Still very capable and can out crawl my buddies TRX4.

The 10.3 is just an absolute beast, great steering angles, insane ground clearance with the portals, a very balanced suspension and the dig function will make it turn on a dime. ( I have my dig setup as a 3 position, 4x4, rear freewheel, rear locked ) and is not as top heavy as the 10.2.

I also have the scx24 to round out the family lol

It's been a lot of fun running the old SCX10 and the new SCX10.3 with my son. The older one definitely gets hung up much more from the large pumpkins, but also the weight of the old one is much lower than the .3 which may also be creating less traction in some cases. The 10.3 is impressive with how much it can do and the short bumper overhangs and high clearance with the portals contribute greatly to that, even better since I replaced the tires with Hyrax.

I've added a Capra to the stable and that is even more capable on steeper rocks than the 10.3.

We continue to tweak the old SCX10. I moved to a horizontal battery location where the old receiver box was which both helped lower the CG and centralize the weight a bit more (the stock location in the rear was too far back and the alternate in the front was way too front biased). Also added an under drive to the rear axle to help improve climbing over obstacles. I have a 55t brushed motor in it from when I initially built it 10+ years ago. While it works, it's not exactly a wheel speed king, so will probably bump to a 27-35t, especially since we are using 2S on that rig for my son.

We've started to build a trail for the trucks which has created some nice challenges for us with the rigs, some pics of a couple sections are attached.

Crazy to see the side by side on the ground clearance difference.
