Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

I am going to replace my scx10 with a more capable rig so I decided to have some fun with it. Goal here is something I can blast through a little mud, sand, occasional trail, nothing too technical since I lose some stability. I like to think it’s purpose built for just general relaxing fun. Also I live in Florida where there are zero mountains and very few 1:1 crawlers, kind of goes with what is seen around here.

I started a new thread even though the beginning chassis was the Jeep but it will be an entirely different truck when I’m done. Anyways here’s a pic of the first phase.

Re: Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

I completely disassembled and inspected/cleaned/reassembled the truck. In good shape for its age. Plan is to run it and replace what I break with fancy parts. I grabbed the least offensive lift plates I could find and left them black so they will blend in. I set the shocks in the middle of the lift so it’s not jacked up sky high. The shock braces are hand made and polished aluminum bolted to the body posts and will function as a base for Velcro body mounts.

I shimmed up the servo so I could use the lowest hole, it was in the middle one. I figured more leverage is better. Also the steering link doesn’t hit anymore. I looked at clocking the front axle forward (was an issue on the stock setup) but I have perfect caster now. Will read up on it, may need different knuckles. Not losing sleep over it because wraith axles are in the plans. I don’t plan on adding crazy spacers or anything.

Electronics are up high and out back, battery in front. Not planning on sliders or anything and will have minimalist bumpers made of aluminum and either polished or painted black.

Re: Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

I know mud trucks aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I am going to keep this one reasonable. Not lifted to the point of being worthless and no humongous tractor tires. Plans for wheels are keep these 1.9 bead locks and run Proline boggers. If I can find a scale looking 2.2 setup I will run those.

The body will be Axial 67 Chevy. Plans for paint are a weathered aqua color. Anyways open to suggestions, I know I have to waterproof to a certain extent but this thing will be more show than go, not burying it, hate cleaning and breaking crap. I did swap back to the 12t motor, it was more fun and I will need the wheel speed. Cheers

A better look at the frame color etc in sunlight, it really pops. I wire brushed, sanded, and cleared the frame so it should hold up.

I’ve never trimmed and painted a clear body so it should be interesting. Will probably add one of the scale blowers to the hood (recessed) but I’m still on the fence. Done wrong and they look like toy trucks. Plus less is more right

Lengthened the front upper link. This is a plastic coat hanger drilled out and tapped at both ends, all thread connecting it to the chassis end, and the kit hardware threaded into the axle end. Clocked the pinion up quite a bit, caster is perfect (C hubs pointing just a hair back). I shimmed the servo to keep the horn angle plumb.

Re: Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

Front shaft angle is 100x better, I can live with that. Steering is good for an scx10. Took it for a spin and it launches hard with the 12t, my neighbor was impressed. Can’t wait to get a body on it but decided I’m going with a weathered look because I already rolled it twice. Scuffed up all of my new brackets lol.

Awesome! Watching and Waiting...

The Proline Boggers are 5.4" tall just to give you an idea, as big as the taller 2.2's. If you want pictures, I have them mounted up on Locked Up Rc's Recluse rims and 7mm wideners.
They are almost exactly the same size as the Proline 2.2" Tsl's, which i have mounted on Axial Wraith beadlocks.

Yeah pics would be great. I’m going to hold off on spacers until I see how they clear/look with the offset on these wheels. Latest idea is a DIY rear sway bar so I’m headed to the hardware store to see what bits I can find.

Both the Bronco and Jeep are 1/8 th scale bodies.

1/9 scale body, and probably more the look you are after...

Thanks! Yeah I think the Boggers will be the ticket. Will save a little coin not having to buy new wheels. The beadlocks I have are decent, easy to take apart and seem to grab the bead well. They are metal so added a lil weight too.

Re: Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

Alright...take it easy on me, never done one of these but I think I got the theory down...made a rear sway bar setup. I used simple plastic sleeve bushings, we will see how they hold up. The top part: there is a coat hanger rod through the styrene sleeve, the styrene is just for positioning and looks. The sway bar is not that thick, it is what I would call scale. It passes through the frame. The arms articulate with the rear end. It seems to work really well and stiffened the rear without compromising too much articulation. Should keep the rear planted during launches.

The arms are pretty much mirrored in length, profile, bends...the drilled holes are for looks.

Made some spacers to move the front shocks outboard because I lifted it a little more and the upper shock mount was contacting the frame. Stepped up a size on the hardware too just to over engineer it.

Starting to look the part. I don’t plan on brushless or 3s for now, want to keep its capabilities scale.

Re: Phildirt’s SCX10 mud and trail truck

Front shock limiting straps to keep the droop to a minimum during those hard launches because all mud trucks have those right? I will do something more scale in the future but this works for now and helped me dial in the length.
