Another incredible day of crawling (5+ hours) with my v1 10.2; this thing is still fairly stock and performs so bloody good! I finally got a chance to run the 1.9 P-L Flatiron XL tires out and they impressed me a lot considering that I have been running silver KLR tires for a while now. They have earned their keep on my original 10.2 rig!

Tons of hard hitting rolls, crashes and tumbles today and I have yet to break or bend anything on this beast.

About 200 meters left on the trail at the end of the day and I discovered only two of the six Locked-Up RC scale acorn lug nut bolts were remaining on the passenger side rear wheel and I didn't have the special tool to tighten them since I never considered that these bolts would be an issue out on the trail. About 50 meters later the wheel fell off!!!

Here's some pics.....

I've been there with the same bolts Bill, as much as it pained me, I put a small dab of loctite on each one after my latest tear down.

How do you think the rock beast xl's would compare to those tires you've tried on this truck?

I've never used the 1.9 RB XL tires, so I can't give you an honest opinion. I have used the 2.2 versions of both and I would have to say I prefer the Flatiron XL tires over the RBII, I believe the slightly more open tread design of the FI XL tires provide better rock crawling performance.

After snapping the the Panhard mount on my other 10.2, I decided to upgrade this 10.2 as well. I went with Samix front shock hoops on the SR5 10.2 and STRC front shocks hoops for this one.

Hi Bill,

I would like to know what lubricant you use on the front Universal joint axles?
and how often you clean and re-lube them?

Thank You Bill for your time and help,
Darris

I use 3in1 lubricant and I clean and lube them after each and every run.

Sweet builds, the Toyota has to be one of my all time favorites for a lexan body.

Great thread and extremely informative! What thickness and type of washer did you use? Any product link? Thanks Bill!

Sorry, no product link....it's just a washer from my stash of parts. I have to get the pics reloaded on this thread soon.

No worries. I'm sure I could figure it out from a pic. Thanks for trying to get those reloaded.

I have finally fixed all the photos for this thread. Unfortunately, I traded this rig several months ago so there isn't any updates. I regret getting rid of this truck, it was a lot of fun to run. I may just have to build another!

Sounds like lots of folks are having the issue of the spur gear wobbling...but I have found the cure:

The first slipper plate does not have enough of a step (shelf) on the upper shaft therefore causing the plate to have enough room to wobble because it's not completely stabilized.

I added a washer to the shaft for the first metal slipper plate to tighten up against. Washer - 11.85mm OD / 5mm ID
I also used a bearing in the spur gear instead of the bushing, but this has no "bearing" on the wobble!
Then I used another washer (same size) up against the outside slipper plate before the spring.

Also, make sure the spring is straight when the outer Nyloc nut is tightened up. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to straighten the spring once the nut was snugged up.

I hooked up all of the electronics to do a bench test and the spur has zero wobble now. Prior to the washers, I could turn the spur by hand and see the wobble.

Open up those spur covers and add your washers now!

BTW, the upper shaft has a bit of play in and out, but that won't affect anything as long as the pinion is located on the motor shaft correctly so that there is always gear mesh without binding throughout the minor amount of in/out travel.

Thank you so much Bilinvic for a detail explaining about building the transmission. Such a invaluable Senior in this rc community truly a blessing. Saved a lot of time to figure it out.

I see you, sadly, sold this rig, but I read this entire thread on my lunch break and I have to say it has me even more excited to finish my SCX10 II build. First class thread and rig as always, Bill!
