Looking for Some Simple Ideas
 

Looking for ideas or setups using the stock out of the box crawler. I bought the kit instead of the RTR to learn the truck, but it's my first crawler. Also looking for advice on the best shock replacements for the typical SCX10 leaky shocks that they couldn't fix with the Rev. 2

If you want to spend about a hundred dollars on a set of shocks go with the RC4WD 100mm King Shocks I get 4 1/2" of travel / articulation on my SCX10 II

If you want replacements I would go with Pro-Line.

I went with G-made transition shocks and run droop (very little oil). Love it!
As far as builds everyone has their opinions and love their own mods from what I can see. There is awesome builders and a ton of info to review. But you will not know what works until you run it stock yourself and make mods as you go. Otherwise you don't know what you benefit from verses stock. Most people think this truck rocks stock or very little mods. it all depends on your driving style and application too.

In my area there are some high rocks where I go crawling. I need some more clearance to the front tires (obviously I could cut the bumper but I don't want to destroy body corners). Is there a way to lift it a bit? I know that it probably wouldn't help the tipping issue by any means.

That's always the grind. Adding more clearance will generally raise the center of gravity. One improvement in one area generally means a sacrifice somewhere else.

One thing that may help if you raise it up is to put more weight in it down low to counteract the higher center of gravity. With the older SCX10 we had brass parts that slipped into the axles called beef tubes. Right now there really isn't an equivalent for the new truck. You could weigh the wheels down, but your sacrifice there is less wheel speed and more strain on the the driveline. It's always a catch 22. I would work more on just getting more driving time with your rig and learning what lines to take to maximize the performance of your truck. "thumbsup"

Beef tubes are available for the SCX10-II…. I've seen them on the bay for sure.

Yes, they are out there for sure. But the problem is they are about one-fifth of the weight of the original beef tubes. That's part of the downfall of the newer smaller axles. Less room for weight!

Brass knuckles and C hubs will be the cat's pajamas.

+1 fro the 100mm King shocks. The Proline(#6060)shocks are only 90mm.

Simple mod for a better approach angle on the front is to cut the bumper up a bit. No cutting in the lexan required.
Just shorten the posts a bit, drill new holes, and cut off the back corners of the bumper. Here's a picture from my SCX10-II, also from my build thread.

I agree with the 100mm kings. I bought some and they are pretty awesome. I filled them with 80wt, and the perform perfect for me. They seamed to help with side hilling too.

Thats how I made the best out of a bad situation. Unlike a lot of folks around here, my scx10 II has seen a lot of miles and lots of abuse.

i don't have an scx10 2 but looking at your pictures, if you would have the bumper more in.
wouldn't it be easier to cut the holder? just the part to the set screw hole.. so the bumper could go more in. or both to get even more ..

Never thought of that. Yes I think cutting the mount back will work to add even more clearance. I probably won't do it though. I'm having custom bumpers made, so the stock ones will not be going back on.

The way the bumper is right now is how it is supposed to be lined up with the stock body. Yes cutting the bumper does not require lexan cutting but the lexan will get messed up on the corners without the bumper protecting it.

Personally for shocks I use Traxxas slash big bores with scx10 red upper spring and rc4wd king 90mm lower spring along with scx10 lower spring cups work great and no leaks, Kings leak IMO there all show and no go
Proline powerstroke scaler shock is also a great choice
