Default Front end chatters

I'm having an issue with a kit build scx10ii.

The front cvds chatter when steering is past 20 degrees. I've taken the knuckles apart and inspected them to find only the cvds themselves to have a lot of slop.

Anyone else notice this?

Just a bit, mostly at (close to) max steering. It probably starts a bit earlier, but with the wheels on the ground I only really notice it when close to max.
I think the Vaterra Ascender has the same thing. Probably has something to do with the large steering angles both trucks have.
20 degrees though... Shouldn't be a problem then.

line up the cvds, universals what ever, they need to be in line of each other, just look at the front end straight on turn left an right, make sure the axles are in synch with each other, if not take one side apart an turn axle till it lines up with the other side, then reinstall.

By "chatter" do you mean surging in the driveline, or just noise in general?

fomoco- I will check that out even though in my mind I don't see how that will change it.

1967Typhoon- I guess you could call it a surge as it takes more throttle to turn and you can see the front start to hop when given more throttle at extreme steering angles.

Also, I first noticed the chatter or binding when trying to make a slow tight turn. I then picked up truck and throttled it up slowly while progressively turning wheels in both directions .

When doing this I noticed the front end wanting to start chattering at around 20 degrees or so.

mine did the same thing, it was the kit version with universals, wouldn't do a full turn left or right with out chattering or binding, aligned the axles, then after a few runs , its smooth as butter now. also look at the inside of the front rims they are really close to the tie rod ends , watch an see there is no rubbing

There will be surging in the driveline when the front is turned sharply pretty much no matter what you do. It's caused partially from having a locked diff in the front.

On the old SCX10, clocking the axles properly helped a ton, but it was still there.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You just have to get used to it.

Will do guys, I will try a few things when I get home tonight and report back.

I've been on hiatus from the hobby for about 10 years now, got the bug again when a neighbor brought out a truck to show off.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Well, I did some more research and aligned the driveshafts like they did on the original scx10 and it not help.

Hey fomoco, how did you align the axles?

Make the universals look the same when installed. That way they aren't fighting eachother in a turn.

scalefreak 93 says it right, universals need to be installed the same direction, if they are not just remove one end of the axle the c-hub an knuckle assembly turn the axle universal till it looks like the opposite side, put back together, an see if that helps

The universals on the cvds are oriented the same on both sides so I'm just going to drive it for now and have some fun as that's what it's all about.

Thanks again everyone..!!!
