Default Different take on Suspension

In order to get room for a full interior / rear compartment I startet tinkering around with the suspension. First idea was to build a leaf spring setup, but I was afraid to loose to much travel and flex, so I am playing around now with a coil sprung setup with separate shocks.

Enough words, pics now:

It looks real cool and perfectly executed.
I don't quite understand though why you didn't just angle the shocks with the springs.

Thanks for the nice comment!

I was looking for a more scale look, so I took inspiration from my old Land Rover.
Indeed, angled coil-over shocks would perform better.

Interesting and well done, let us know how it preforms .

looks good, but I would figure out how to capture the top coil of the spring as well, to keep it from becoming dislodged

Killer idea but i would think the springs would bow out in the middle instead of compressing up and down.

Thank you. The springs just snap on them and be kept in place.

Thank you. Yes, the upper end may pop out. Upper spring seat is a part of Axial AX80032, pressed in the aluminium bracket.

Thank you. It is worse. When flexing, the spring will be s-bent due to misalignment of the spring seats.

Conclusions by now:

- changing springs to try different spring rates is very easy. The springs just snap on the lower spring seat / spring retainer

- the springs do not bow out while compressing straight

- the springs get s-bent horrible at full flex (travel and flex is a tad more than stock)

- spring rate is linear due to the vertical arrangement

- damping rate is degressive due to decreasing angle of linkage (which is negligible for a low speed vehicle)

I will post some flex-shots tomorrow. Thank you all for your nice comments!

You won't be able to keep long coil springs in line as they compress...
It's not like it hasn't been tried and proven a failure in the past.

And is likely why coil over struts came to be engineered
So that the longer coil springs could be utilized.

But some folk just gotta try their engineering skills and attempt to ignore history.
Seems like a whole lot of work with no promise of good results.

Why not simply design a canti-lever system ?

It does already exist for RC platforms...
but maybe you could make a better system ?

The Revo uses a canti-lever suspension and will eliminate the need for shock towers.

Dinky RC borrows that design and makes a kit to fit the SCX-10
ie: SCX10 Cantilever Kit – DinkyRC.com
Often used out back to retain a full bed depth without punching holes thru that for shock towers.

Maybe try yer idea using shorter coil springs ?

good luck

so, is ignoring history the same thing as not reading posts and talking trash about something that OP has already stated was a problem?

he just said that the spring compression was a problem, you posting up after that and saying the same thing is nothing more than mental masturbation at that point.

If the OP wants to play with the suspension on his rig, is having fun doing it and not telling everyone else to do it...what's the problem??? Isn't part of this hobby about experimenting and having fun??

I've been running standalone coils on my CR01 for years. Working like a charm. I do get some some S-bending at full compression, but it's never been a problem. I think your setup looks great! If it works for you, that's all that matters.

I read his postings dipstick

He said he was attempting a scale look !?

If a scale look doesn't reflect a real 1:1 rig
then I have no clue what is meant by stating that.

In 1:1 history... the longer coil lengths could not be made to work as wanted or hoped.
Complain to the engineers of the past whom couldn't make it work well...
they spent years trying to figure out how to keep the longer spring inline.
And used various methods in their attempt of doing that.
Finally realizing the better solution was to design something else that worked better.

Maybe you can fit a square peg in a round hole...
But history's engineers said screw that and found a different approach.

I did not criticize his attempts without offering other viable options.

Tho' if kissing butt and adding your motivational support means something to you... have at it.
Means little to me and IMO that isn't helpful in resolving anything.

People these days do not comprehend constructive criticism whatsoever...
and this modern society is doomed to repeat historical boogers... forever

so screw you and yer not to scale RC play toys

*yawn*

I like what he did, so what?

he acknowledged the shortcomings, no need to be insulting towards him after that.

he's taken constructive criticism and thanked people for the input.

You're just being a dick in here and trolling.

as far as you trying to call out OSRC, try looking for it, he's got dozens of threads on his rigs here and all over a bunch of other forums as well.
