Default Smallest pinion on kit tranny?

Not that I'm expecting this to be a thread with lots of action but I couldn't find this info when I searched for it, so I'm starting a thread with my own findings to hopefully benefit the next person that tries to search for this kind of info.

I put a Holmes Hobby 3500Kv Puller Pro in in 10.2 (running 3S). With stock gearing (15/56 in the kit) that effectively made it into a race car.

This leads me to a hunt for the smallest pinion gear I can fit - there isn't a ton of room to drop teeth since the can hits the tranny housing, but there is definitely some room to drop teeth.

I haven't been able to determine if there's a larger spur that would fit, but there's not a lot of additional room under the gear cover to allow for that - if something does exist, I'm going to speculate that 58 would probably be the largest spur that would fit.

9 tooth doesn't fit - the gears almost mesh, but they're still about 1mm away from being a good fit.

Tonight/this weekend I'm going to try a 10 tooth. I think that will probably fit, I'll update the thread after I try it out..

Good to know, I assumed 12 would fit as I've got a 13 on now and there's still some room to go..

Seems kits are all over the map on the stock gearing..

Axial lists the kit as 56/15 (that's what mine came with) and the RTR's as being 13/56 but you're definitely not the first person I've encountered that got something else...

Im currently running a 10t with a 35t brushed motor and two speed tranny, the clearance isnt an issue at the pinion. It creeps when it needs to in 1st then 2nd gear plus 3s has been more than enough wheel speed so far. Gearing down has helped provide more torque in 2nd gear.

Are you running the Axial kit tranny with the 2 speed add-on or another brand/type?

I'm asking because I couldn't get a 10t to mesh anywhere near properly on a stock kit tranny..

Yeah, I think 12t is the limit. I tried an 11t and it was close but wouldn't mesh quite properly. The 11t only needs a tiny bit more room, probably .010"-.020" or less.

I may try dremeling the motor mount to see if I can get the 11t to mesh properly but so far it's looking 12t is the low limit. I"m not overly optimistic about being able to get the 11t on there properly - the can is pretty much jammed against the trans case as it is, so I don't know if it will move any further..

Having picked myself up a SCX10 II kit, it's got the 15/56 gearing just now.
Does anyone know if a larger spur will fit yet? Does anyone have any videos of 12/56 running?

I don't got video of 12/56. It worked. I did move up to a 13 and really liked the little extra wheel speed and my temp was still fine on the motor/ESC so I just changed it to a 14 and will try that this weekend. Just get a few pinions and play around and see what works best for you.

As far as I can tell, I don't think a bigger spur will fit under the gear cover. It might, but I haven't been able to find one to test the fit with.

What motor/battery do you plan to run?

I've settled in at 11, I might be able to get a 10 on but I'm happy with the 11 for my set-up..

According to the highly accurate method of trigger finger feel, 11/56 on 3500KV gets about the same wheel speed as 15/56 on 35 turn..

I'm going to convert it to a 2 speed but want it geared low enough so 1st gear is for proper scale crawling and 2nd can still be used for trailing. Going to try an 11t first

I've lots of different motors but will be starting with a 55t on 3s and trying 11/56.
I see GPM do a steel pinion that fits under the standard cover that's 57t so if i strip my spur by poor mesh with the 11t i might try the 57t

Older thread, but figured I'd post this for anyone else looking.

A 10T pinon will work for the kit tranny with a Castle 1406 Slate/crawler motor and the stock 56T spur. However there is literally zero room left, if your motor OD is any larger, you won't be able to get a proper gear mesh.

1406 2280kV, 10/56 gearing, and a SSD two speed is a great combo. 15/56 was also pretty great on 2S with the two speed as well.
