Default Slipper Clutch Question

I am building the SCX10 II and I am up to the part where I have assembled the slipper clutch and put the spring and locknut on.

The instructions call for the nut to be tightened down so the measurement between the top of the plate and the bottom of the locknut measures 8mm.

Problem is when I do that the clutch wont turn.

Can someone help please.

Thanks

Hey. Try loosing all the screws that hold the whole transmission together. If it works, tighten them up but constantly check if You didn't overtighten any of them.

Thanks I tried that and it makes no difference.
I even stripped the clutch down and re assembled it and its still too tight.
The only thing that stops it turning is the spring is too tight I slacken that off and it works.

Do you means the clutch doesn't slip or the trans itself won't spin? You shouldn't be able to make the clutch slip by hand.

When I build the clutch plates everything spins fine.
However when I put the spring on and tighten it so the distance
from the bottom of the locknut to the plate is 8mm I can't move anything.

I can turn it with a screwdriver in one of the holes in the shaft but it
does sound grating.

Maybe I should follow the instructions and then connect the motor
and see if it can spin it.
Thanks

Something definitely isn't right then. The transmissions spinning freely shouldn't be affected be how tight the slipper is. The slippers only purpose is to allow the spur gear to slip under heavy load. The trans should spin free especially if you don't have a motor installed yet. I would disassemble it and go back through it again. It sounds like you may have a shaft pin missing or possibly the wrong shaft spacer and this is causing the top shaft to bind when you tighten the slipper down

you shouldn't be able to turn the clutch by hand as stated above, it only turns(slips) when the wheels are in a bind on the rocks or trail. as long as the entire spur assembly turns the trans gears by hand you are fine. I personally tighten the the nut as far as it will go so there is virtually no slipping possible, or install a slipper eliminator on my rigs.

I suspect we are getting some wires crossed here with your terminology...

That's the problem when I tighten the locknut nothing moves.
I did have a problem when assembling the gears as the spacers didn't
seem to be correct in the diagram so I followed the diagram below it where it shows it assembled and it looked fine.

I think I will take it apart as suggested and rebuild the gears and spacers.
Thanks

i know when i was building mine on the instructions one of the spacers in the gearbox was listed as the wrong part. you had a short and a long part and the picture size and the part it said were two different sizes. i went with the size on the pic as appose to the writing and it assembled then correctly with no binding. dont know if this helps.

Thanks for that I did have a problem with the assembly and I even have a piece of black tubing left over.
I have now stripped the gearbox down and it looks fine so I think I will have to go back another step and start again.

I also could not follow the assembly instructions in step 18 so I tried to build that part by looking at step 19 and trying to figure it out from there.

Seems I got something wrong so I will strip step 18/19 down and do it again.

Problem is which diagram do I follow?

Diagram 18 is the correct assembly but the spacers shown are wrong. Easiest thing to do is to not use the 24.7mm long spacer. This is the one you should have left over. The other two are the correct ones. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I have just measured the tube I have left over and I am pleased to
say it is the 24.7 one.

I hope we can presume that this means that I built it right and I
can look elsewhere for the problem.

It's very frustrating but we are getting there.

Good deal. Next I'd try looking at the shaft pins.

Thanks I have dismantled the gearbox but to be honest it did look ok but
it won't hurt to do it again.

I will report back tomorrow.
Thanks

As I understand it, there is also a gear in the trans that looks like it can fit in either way but one way it binds.

Is there supposed to be a bit of play in the shaft I connect the clutch assembly to?
I can move it in and out about 1/8"".

Yes there is on the stock shaft..VP makes a shaft that eliminates the play.

Ok today I have stripped down the complete transmission back to a set of parts and started again.

I found a video on YouTube by a guy called Joe Ferguson Scale Freak.com who takes you through building the transmission step by step.

So I thought why not follow it.......I did and everything works fine.

I still don't know why I don't think I did anything different but hey it works so now I can move on.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the problem your input is appreciated.
