Default How can I fit a 550 in my 10.2 RTR ?

I'd like to mount the cheap Traxxas 21t 550 used in the TRX-4 in my 10.2 RTR XJ for the additional torque. How can I make it fit? It looks like the battery tray is in the way.

If you don't use huge batteries then you could shave/trim/cut the tray just where it would touch the motor; leave the rest untouched. Then you can use the 550 and still be able to use larger batteries in the future (they will get support from the 3rd corner you left), provided you're willing to go back to a 540 with them.

for 550 motor, Maybe you would need to trim your skid plate a bit for better fitness/ But I could be wrong.

A dremel comes to mind. Harbor Freight has a weak sauce one with coupon (like $5); includes lots of attachments.

You could turn the trans and skid around so the spur faces forward.

Won't the gear cover hit the battery tray or at least be tough to remove?

Pull 4 screws, turn it around and see. You definitely have to cut to run a 550 as is so this is another idea. Spur covers aren’t necessary at all. I run several trucks without them. Just throwing another idea out there.

My area has enough crusty dusty abrasive crud that I'd greatly prefer that it were shrouded.

And it's a great idea! I was just wondering about the spur cover because my boy's ax10 doesn't have one and it's always getting crap in it which then makes alarming grinding noises that we have to investigate and remedy; annoying.

I used Robinson extra hard spur and pinion and they like to eat the rock as lunch

I bought I 550 to put in mine but never went through with it. I run a 5000 mah 3S that take up the whole tray and didn't want to cut into it.

That's a BIG log! =O You must go trailing for what, 4 hours with that? Doesn't it make your rig tipsy, raising the COG so much? Or do you not do much technical crawling?

Yeah, it lasts quite a while! It doesn't seem to kill much performance as far as I'm concerned, I do a mix between trail and intermediate crawling so it's fine for me. It's all in the suspension setup I suppose.

I'm running a venom 5000mah 2s 25c hardcase so I'm not so sure about fitment, but I know there's some room in there.

147x32mm is the max battery size for the Scx10 ii tray. Here's a link to some inexpensive batteries that should fit, but if you cut the tray you'll have to measure and adjust the lipo finder's length-variable slider:
