Default Rear Axle Housing doesn't want to line up

I can't get the rear axle housing to line up with the support rod holes. The support rods are too long and won't let the housing line up so the rods will install. Are the assembly directions correct concerning the lengths of the rods? I've checked and re-checked until I'm about half nutz. There has to be something I'm not seeing. The front went together with no problems.

I'm too old for computer skills. I'll have to figure it out or wait for my Grandson to visit and get me pictures. Thanks
