The biggest advantages of the Mamba X are adjustability, strong BEC, and capability. You can dial in your throttle curves, turn drag brake on and off, and do many other things. The Hobbywing 1080 is a bad ass little ESC, especially for the price, but it is not as good as an X.

If going brushless, I'd go with the X NOT the micro. I know people say they run the micros with no issues but I have not been so lucky. I have ran 2 different Mamba Micro Xs on two different rigs with 2 different motors. One failed about 10 minutes into EASY driving and the other gets stupid hot fast. The first was on a lightweight truck with a 2300kv Roc 412. The second one was with a Slate 2280 on my Toyzuki V2 so it has overdrive, but weighs a good bit less than 8lbs. The truck was geared at 56/9 and the motor barely got warm. I switched back to a HH motor and 1080 esc and finished out the comp season with no issues.

I had the exact opposite experience.

My GCM Skeleton is super cramped for electronics so I was running a Tekin RS Gen 2 with a 2200kv Puller Pro stubby on 3S, after about 45 minutes it would constantly go into thermal shutdown. Replaced the Tekin with a Micro X because it was practically the only other ESC that would fit and all the ESC heat problems went away.

I will agree that if space or weight isn't a concern, I would definitely pick the Mamba X over the Micro X.

I'm surprised to hear that about Tekin. I've never had any of their ESCs heat up on me.

The ESC must not have liked the cramped conditions in that truck, it runs fine in my TF2.

Some Tekin ESCs, like the RS Gen II, are in an extremely cramped case without any provisions (at least that I know of) for cooling. It's a miracle they don't all overheat. Somehow they pull it off. Their electronics must be extremely efficient.

It'd be cool of JRH or Robert@Castle should give some input on this.

Odd...I've got two other local guys that had the Micro Xs in crawlers and they would also constantly overheat too. This isn't crawling in the summer...I had these in the fall/winter/spring, which is normally <70 degrees and the ESC had adequate room around it and above it.
