Default 10.2 built my way. No kit necessary.

This is something I’ve thought about since last summer and have been slowly accumulating parts to make it happen. The axles were purchased from a member on here with ssd aluminum from and rear, the chassis was from eBay, all the other parts were new or items I had laying around. Basically I didn’t want any extras from a kit. The sbk wasn’t for me. I didn’t want the shocks, one piece axles or the trans, so that was a no go. So after getting the axles and the chassis I went with ssd link, steering links and a lock ped up Panhard bar. The wheels are locked up I had power coated red and used lure gridlock rings on them. Power is a HobbyKing 1080 with a hackmoto 35t motor on 3s power. Body is a sr5 with a proline rear cage. The shocks are temporary aluminum icons. All I have left is paint and mounting with magnets and some other small items and then it’s done.

Thanks. The wheels turned out better than I could have expected. Nice to have an option for color and lurc is the best but you only get 3 color choices. The body will be a metallic red with gunmetal flames. I have to wait until the weather warms up here to paint it outside. I made the mistake of painting a body in my basement once. Never again the fumes are way to strong.

great desition, I mean, choose your parts and put it together, you don't have to use the shock parts that you will change later, I will follow that path for my next build .

Thanks. The icons were just to get it together at this point. I will change them out to either ssd or dravtech at a later date. When I get a minute I will put up a complete list of the parts I used.

Thanks Danza. Definitely happy with the way this is going. Step one of the magnetic body mounts. I’m taking a little different route than the videos I’ve seen on YouTube. I stared by using gorilla glue epoxy to mount the magnets on the posts. I’m going to let it set up for a day or two before I move on to gluing them to the body. I may have to use something other than the magnets on the body because the one’s I got are unbelievably strong. Might end up using a washer on the body if I feel I can’t separate the magnets easy enough. I’m going to put tape between the magnets to possibly lessen the strength, but I’m not sure how effective that will be. Time will tell. I’ve been trying different techniques with every new rc I build so now we wait to see how well I do.

There it is. Except for the decals and some adjustments it’s all ready to rip up the trails. I can say the magnetic body mounts were an extreme success for me. The key to the whole process was waiting for the epoxy to dry for 24 hours and putting a piece of tape in between the magnets when I epoxied the second one. That way they didn’t stick together.

Any particular reason for using the Cherokee kit transmission? I'm slowly collecting the bits and pieces for a non-kit 10.2 build and haven't decided on a transmission yet.

Honestly I just like the kit trans. Makes it easier to put and interior in it as well, when that time comes. I looked into building up one of the 3 gear old style trans and it wasn’t really cost effective to me. Brand new the kit trans and the skid were $65. Also the old style trans is a little over a half inch taller and you can see from the picture I had to trim the body for the kit trans to fit. I wouldn’t have had another half inch to play with, without raising the body up higher.

I was finally able to get it out for its first run. The truck performed awesome. The event was part of my local club wny scalers tiny tire extravaganza events. We only use 4.19 and smaller tires for these g6 style events. 3 minor issues and one major one came up. Front driveshaft set screws loosened and I had only rear wheel drive. Not a big deal and it was an easy on trail fix. I lost a rear spring cup, two of the magnets came lose from the body, but I expected that to happen. I didn’t feel like I got a good bond when I first epoxied them on. The biggest problem was the major crack in the body. I didn’t even notice it until I was done with the run. I didn’t have any major falls or rolls, so I’m not even sure where it happened. I have a case opened with proline to hopefully get a replacement.

Got some upgrades in. Boom racing shock towers and rear bumper mount to use the knight customs proline cage mount for the 10.2. Hpi venture shocks because they were $24 on eBay and the venture guys never complain about the shocks. The shock towers give a lot of mounting spots and the quality is really nice. Proline came through and sent me a new hilux body, but I’ve taped this one up for now and I’ll run it until it’s destroyed. Maybe a new front bumper and some different sliders and this should end up exactly how I envisioned the final product.
