Default What gearing & speed control for SCX10ii

What gearing would you use on an SCX10ii with 2.2 Pitbull Rock Beast II tires (5.75in), standard Axial transfer case, all metal portal axles (link below), stock Axial speed controller, and Traxxas 3785 Titan 12 Turn 550 Motor? Also what speed control would you recommend as upgrade? Preferably 4S. Appreciate your help..

Without knowing the gear reduction the portal axles offer you it will be hard to suggest a good ESC / Motor combo.

You have a 12T which I believe would be around 3900Kv which will be way too fast for the SCX10II on standard portals especially on 4S. Most likely there will not be enough gear reduction in those portals to use that motor.

I have the SCX10III and put in the transmission 1:7 gear reduction and I use a Slate 3800Kv motor but my top speed is just under 9MPH in 2nd. You cannot gear down an SCXII anywhere close to what an SCXIII can be geared to.

As for ESC and wanting 4S. Go with Mamba X. 2S to 6S and can run brushless as well as brushed.

If you will never go brushless the Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL goes 2S to 6S as well brushed only.

The other ESCs that most recommend are rated to 3S such as the Hobbywing 1080 and AXE systems.

I want a video of 4s, portals and a 12T brushed motor !

Parts will be flying everywhere

Start with a hobbywing 1080, a Holmes trailmaster 550 21T motor and a 3s LiPo. It's a cheap and very reliable combo.
Can also go for the new crawlmaster Sport motors too.

If you really want 4s, you need to beef up the driveline and go brushless.

Thank you guys, very helpful. Didn't know portal gearing had anything to do with it actually. How would I find out what portal gear reduction I have? Looked on Ebay description but doesn't say (below).

Yes I looked as well. Where as they don't publish the information you'll need to open up the portal cover, count the number of teeth on each gear and divide the larger gear by the smaller gear tooth count.

For example the portals in the SCXIII are 23 / 12 for a ratio of 1.92. This could then be used to calculate the final drive ratio (FDR) with the ratio of the transmission and diffs in the axle.

Bottom line that 12T motor will be way too fast. Not only will you be eating gears on 4S but it will be very hard to control at speed. It will also have a horrible startup for slow rock crawling.

As stated by others I would setup with something below on 3S:

Mamba X / 550 21T to 27T brushed motor
Hobbywing 1080 / 550 size motor 21 to 27T brushed motor

Mamba X / Slate 2280 to 2850Kv brushless motor
Hobbywing AXE 550 2300Kv to 2700Kv brushless motor

I had numerous issues with tire clearance when I went to 2.2" tires, and mine were only 5.4" tall. You will have to limit steering to clear the frame rails and front links.

I would suggest a HH Brxl for a esc, as it can run 2-6s and has a stout 5 amp bec. I would try 3s if you insist on the 12t motor, A 20t 550 would be a lot more liveable, and not so destructive on 4s.

If you really want lots of wheelspeed I suggest going to brushless.

I love running big tires, and believe portals are not necessary when doing so.

My 2.2 scx10's...

110% agree
What's the point of 4S and insane power for SCX10?
It is a good relatively scale rig for rock crawling, trail runs and some mud. If you want high speed offroad go monster or SCT.
With narrow AR44 axles and high center of gravity raised even higher with portals and 2.2 wheels your rig will be extremally unstable.

Thanks guys. Went with 3S below instead. I'm sure it will be plenty fast with those much larger tires, no need for 4S. Can't I just dial down the 12T motor in the programmable ESC to make it livable?

Yes you can through the ESC if it allows it or the transmitter with expo. How livable it will be is really up to you. Where as you already have the motor try it out. Worst case you pick up another motor if you find that you are not able to attain the slow startup you want or if it seems too jerky on technical obstacles for your driving style / terrain.

OK I will try it out and see. This is mainly for my 5 year old on Jeep trails and dirt roads not too technical so I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Whoa there hold on!

5 year old? Get a different motor or put in a really low throttle curve / a lot of expo. A 5 year old will ham fist that controller and even though not technical and dirt road, I guarantee you that rig will be rammed into something and break right there on the spot. As for teh SCX10 II you'll break the pan hard mount at the shock hoop with a mild jump or smacking the wheel just right into an object and then your walking the rig back. Order the aluminum shock mounts with pan hard bar regardless.

I am not trying to be a douche. I just want you to be aware those of us that know that motor know you will need to gear the truck down to prevent over heating as well as adjust the throttle curve so that full power won't be achieved until the trigger is past 80% or so of full travel.

If you can find a way to limit the total percentage of the motor output to say 25% or 50% as you can with the Axe system do that. If not and your son gives full throttle that rig will be gone in a heart beat and bashed into a tree. I would really hate to see your sons face if the rig is broken in the first 5 minutes.

Actually it's my daughter. She's really good at RC wheeling, doesn't hit anything. Can you dial down motor output with this ESC?

I would just get a Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 550 21T or 27T and stop worrying about the issues that will arise from the titan 12T.

You will spend 20$ for a much better quality motor and it will be easier to tune the truck properly with different pinion size.

Oh your daughter! Bad of me to assume. Well I would hate to see the look on your daughters face if the truck was sent into a tree. OK good to know she has controlled RC's before. With that you know what is best for her. Generally though a 5 year old and fast RC = boom.

I know with the Hobbywing Axe systems you have a motor limit option like I described. I also have a Mamba X ESC and there is the option there too. What ESC are you going to use?

This is sound advice here. Either the HH motor 21T or you can also do the Traxxas 21T titan motor if that can be picked up locally. HH is better but not to the point your daughter will notice and they are the same price.

$20.00 and you'll still have the 12T if you want to try it out, keep as back up, or eventually you'll see another rig that the 12T may work better in that you want.

Just got below in mail today. Great advice thank you so much. Will most likely try out one of those motors, but I will see how the Titan does with this esc quick..

The ESC recommends above 16T motors for 3s

"QUICK" being the operative word here! That thing is going to haul ass for a crawler / trail rig.

Please post back here with your thoughts on the 12T when you see that rig shoot out of the hole!

I was actually trying to find the kv equivalent to the Titan 12T motor and I found this on the Traxxas forum:

I'd have to say the Titan is about equivalent to somewhere between a 17.5 and 21.5 turn Novak motor, if you are using that scale. I ran a fairly nice 27 turn brushed stock motor and found the performance pretty similar to the Titan.

If that motor runs similar to a 27 turn motor it will be a little fast but not so fast you will NEED to swap the motor. A little throttle curve or expo should make it run fine. From here you can fine tune with a pinion gear change.

I am not John Holmes so I cannot give you information as to why some 12T motors would be way too fast and others may be OK. It all has to do with how many slots, windings, can size and some other crap I'm sure that I won't talk about as I am ignorant on those things. Let us know how it goes though! I am curious.
