Default Newbie First Build Thoughts?

Hoping for some wisdom to be parted upon me. The last rc car I built was maybe 20 years ago, a nitro street car that I no longer have. I started looking into building a crawler/rock racer to run in fields and on trails... most likely 80% trails/20% crawling.

I think I'm settled on the scx10 ii raw kit... was thinking of starting with the chassis and slowly building. Let me know if I'm on the right track?

From what I can tell, along with the builders kit I should get:
1)Vanquish transmission top shaft
2)Shock rebuild kits to get a diaphragm for the shocks
3)Tires - Pro-Line BFGoodrich Krawler T/A KX 1.9 G8 Rock Terrain PRO1013614?
4)Wheels - I like the way these look, would they work?
5)Lithium grease, green slime, 30wt shock oil
6)A good wrench set?

Would that get me everything I need to build the chassis?

After that I was going to figure out the electronics then the body last.

Thanks!
David

Personally,

I'd skip the vanquish top shaft (i've build 4-5 raw builders at this point (a few of my friends cars) and have not seen an issue with the top shaft) and rebuild kit for the shocks (just run the plastic ones from the kit and when they leak (which can be very soon), look into others. I use traxxes gts which have been great (i have also tried prolines and the icons).

Tires: No experience with them but... if you're mostly trailing and little crawling.. most will work!
Rims: SSD rims, good choice. Easy to work with.

- I'd suggest getting a set of shims for the diff. You can google search but i believe 10x12mm and 5x7mm are the two sizes needed as there's a little play with the stock axel housing which... will lead to gears grinding.
-- most will suggest shimming the pinion and axel connection.
i wish my description was more clear but i hope through search you'll figure it out.

^ i'd run the above set up until you feel like upgrading !

Electronics, i know you're doing this next but...
Cheap route Hobby wing 1080 esc
- holmes hobby 27t brushed motor..

For the price, i think that above is almost standard.

i run the Hobby wing FOC Axe system... amazing! but pricey.

Imo. These kits are much better than the ones from the 80's/90's

No need to replace the top shaft on the 3 gear in the RBK.
Traxxas big bores, or Gts shocks.
Proline G8 compound Crawlers, or Tsl's
SSD rims are great, make sure you get the proline specific rims.
Marine grease, Lithium greese, Shock oil comes with, and blue threadlock.
Mip, or Vanquish have the best quality tools.

Hobbywing 1080, Holmes Hobbies 27t 550 Trailmaster. Mamba X, an HH Puller pro 2700 kv
Servo depends on budget... A 20kg is adaquate for trail running, A HH v3 servo is probably the best.
Spectrum Dx5c, or Rugged.

Welcome to the site and question of much debate.

Really appreciate the help!

@lonleycreeper:
I have a tub of lithium grease I used for a regular car project, is that good enough?

Overall for budget I'd like to stay around $600

Shims: i think those will work but double check via search here.

Hex set, honestly.. i've been racing for years and dynamite $14.99 set got me through a lot of those years okay. I know MIP is the gold standard but... i'd spend money else where for now. I own protek set now and love them but do you NEED them? i don't think so, just be careful on your screws and down the line if you wear out the dynamite set... that means you're still in the hobby and time to upgrade.

few more suggestions below as i have built a few of these rigs for friends.

Radio: GTB3 flysky is imo, best of the cheapos.

Battery: 3S lipo at 3,000 MAH will make you happy not bad on amazon

Battery charger, Dynamite passport p1 mini is not bad at $45.

Servo: i think 244 oz torque is the sweet spot and all metal gear. The ecopower servos bang for buck is okay but plastic middle gear turns people off.
- Savox 1256Tg 277oz tq is the servo i steer all my friends to get. Some of them opted for the cheaper servos... and 90% have since upgraded.
*note* if you get this, you'll want to upgrade the plastic horn to a low profile metal/alum horn as that is a common weak spot (just remember the correct spline).

tires: durtrax deep woods have been a surprisingly good tire for the price. They do wear faster but since you'll have ssd rims.. not to bad to upgrade/change when/if they do.

Since you'll be trailing, you probably won't wear them out as fast as my wife did as we do a lot of crawling.

Proline hyrax: I love these and a lot of my buddies run them.

Rock beast: i run these as i am more into rock crawling (still good for trailing). they have a lower OD so... something to think about vs the prolines 4.75

Again though... if you are most trailing... most tires will make you happy.
