what do I need to run lights on my xj? do I need to swap the esc? or can I just run a stand alone kit that plugs into the receiver?

What receiver are you running? Does it have outputs for lights?

Probably your best bet would be finding some lights that have a servo plug you can connect to the receiver

Take a look at MyTrickRC. I have a kit for my TRX4, three levels of head light an running lights. With a y-splitter in channel two, you can get brake lights (zero throttle) and reverse lights. You just need to solder a jst plug into your battery lead to power the light controller.

I think you can depending on the light kit and the controller it comes with. However I can't confirm that as it was never my intention to wire mine that way so I've never tried it. If you look on the MTRC site, the individual pages for various light kits should have a linked video with installation instructions. I'm sure you can find some on YouTube as well. I believe the "attack high power" LED headlights in my kit require more than the ~5.4 volts going to my receiver, hence the battery lead jumper.

Are you doing a light bar or headlights and taillights?

This is a cheap 90mm light bar running off receiver power 6V.
