Default Budget/Spare Parts SCX10 II Build for my daughter

So, my daughter decided that she would like a crawler rig like her older brother has, which I think is a good thing. He has a modded SCX10 Deadbolt and I have an SCX10 II Chassis that I bought from a member a while back, a plethora of parts from his rig, as well as lots of other used parts I have gathered along the way.

I have the old radio gear out of his Deadbolt, the used chassis, a set of used SCX10 II axles (they need ring and pinion gears), a set of links and a few different motors laying around. I’m sure I can come up with a set of wheels and tires too.

I will likely lock the transmission into low gear, as she will be learning and I think slower is better.

With having to buy $60 in lockers and the gears for my existing axle housings, am I just better off buying a set of Injora axles all set up already to go?

Or will the gears and diff's from my son's original SCX10 Deadbolt fit in the SCX10 II Axles?

Nah og scx10 and 10.2 gears are not compatible.

I would rather have stock axial stuff than injora axles personally, Iím sure some people would disagree.

If youíre willing to check eBay you might be able to get a set of take off 10.2 axles for around $100. $150 for a set with universal axles. Otherwise, I would post a wanted thread and I bet people around here have some extra ar44 gears they would let go for a reasonable price

I want to say there's a seller by the name of Lumidave on Ebay who parts out brand new rc's. That's who I use when I find them cheaper there.

Thank you. Iíll look them up and save the seller.
I ended up finding the parts I need on Amazon, mainly only used them because I had some points saved up.

I think thisíll be a fun build.

I think I got most the parts I need to get this thing moving. I still need to pick up a set of driveshafts, a set of bearings and possibly a screw set just to be sure I have everything.

What is the go to “budget” driveshaft these days?

Default Budget/Spare Parts SCX10 II Build for my daughter

Personally I use stock 10.2 or 10.3 wildboar hd driveshafts, again they can usually be had on eBay for $30-$40 dollars.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Axial-Capra...-127632-2357-0

If thatís more than youíd like to spend, then Iíd suggest Trx4 take off driveshafts. They can be had for $12-$15, but be aware, it will require slight trimming of the trans output shaft and axle pinion gear shaft for the cross pin holes to line up. Iíve done it before with just a dremel and it works out great.

Thank you, I will definitely look into those. Do you know if they are the metal, or plastic versions? Why in the heck is the Traxxas ones so much cheaper?

For this build, I am looking for inexpensive and functional. I just ordered the two sets he had available.

Using ones that need a little work to make them functional will be a valuable lesson for her. It will teach adaptability and what can be accomplished when you have more time than money. I could have purchased the Axial ones, but there is a method to this madness and she is at a good age to really understand it.

Thanks for the tip on the Traxxas Driveshaft fitment and mods

No problem, glad to help!

No clue why the traxxas drive shafts arenít more expensive, because they are every bit as durable as 10.2 or 10.3 shafts.

Ok, so I have dove in neck deep and the parts I had sitting around are not quite what I thought they were. Nothing quite lined up like I thought it would.

After a few iterations of links, I think Iím good where Iím at with that.

The cheap, purple shocks I got, are just thatÖ actually, their not really that bad, just has stiff springs. Iíll drop some Traxxas yellow dots on them and see where it goes.

I am hacking up an old New Bright Raptor body and have narrowed a Honcho rear cage. This body will be a surprise present. Either for Christmas, or her birthday just after Christmas.
My daughter is really into wolves, her and her friends are the wolf packÖ
So, this body will be tailored to that.

Iím working on getting pics uploaded.

Thank you sir!

Honestly, I am learning tons about what I donít knowÖ
I really thought this thing was pretty much going to throw itself together, boy was I wrong. Literally, every twist of the hex driver and turn of the nut driver brings on a new challenge. So far, I am overcoming them, but man it can be a struggle.

In looking at the pictures a bit closer, I think in need to get the cage a little lower on the body.
Now brainstorming ideas on how to make that happen with the least amount of work, but keeping its structure and eye appeal.

YeahÖ thatís every project ever. I enjoy piecing together a rig from the ground up, but itís always more trouble than you plan for.

It looks like itís coming together though

Ok, when I get home in a few days, I will be mounting the cab to the cage.
I need, or shall I say, want some opinions on how high to mount the cage to the cab.

Close to flush with the top of the cab:

I like it either way, so itís a hard choice for meÖ
