Default Second Time Around

Hi everyone. I just wanted to share my new build in progress.and probably ask some questions and whatever else. So I picked up my second Axial UMG10 4X4 kit to build up into a "Yota" pickup. I really love the way my UMG handles, and my 4 year old pretty much declared posession of my TF2 Marlin, so I decided it was time to build an SCX10II Marlin for myself. The build was pretty straightforward, however adding the Vanquish top shaft, aluminum motor plate, and their Atlas transfer case.

Used the mounting plates (floorpans) and inner fenders from Mod19 on Shapeways. Print quality was good though the passenger (left) side floor sits a couple mm higher than the driver side. Super clean look! I know some folks dont like the cut-up bed look, but it's a trail rig, not a work truck. Haha. The body mounts in the bed are actually the stock UMG10 mounts modded and mounted to the rear crossmember, moved inboard to line up nicely. Esc duties handled by a HW1080 and steering is tackled by a Hitec HS-7955 TG V2.

For wheels I want to keep the 1.7's from the Marlin but I want to try stretching the 1.55 Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. Any thoughts on if that's doable? I've never stretched tires before but I like the size of the tires but feel the 1.7wheel diameter is more fitting for this body. I have RC4WD's narrow pin mount hubs on the way to bring the offset to a more, even if slightly, respectable width.

That’s a great looking truck! I haven’t tried stretching tires myself, but I have the 1.9 claws on my deadbolt and it seemed like the inner bead area was pretty flimsy, maybe applied heat may make it doable. Try on a throwaway tire first lol

I’ve truly never even looked at the unimog kit but it looks amazing, is the front upper link mounted to the chassis or the center skid where the others are mounted?

Thanks! I still hafta paint and stuff yet. A newborn in the house makes anything not baby related almost come to a halt. To answer your question, the front upper link is mounted to the center skid, thru the frame rail.

Thanks Dirtbug! Looks like there are a few key differences between this and the standard scx10.2 kits, but I like that upper link mount better than just a bolt and nut lol

Axial UMG10 is a great rig. I have no complaints with mine.

Yeah Battleborn, there are a few. Most notably that I know of are the 2-speed ready kit version transmission/skid and aluminum shock bodies.
King Dork, I especially love the handling characteristics of the short wheelbase of the UMG10.
So just started paint and realized I had forgotten about the hooks on the bed. Ah well Chose Caterpillar Yellow. Was constantly second guessing my choice, but really like how it looks once painted.

So, here are a couple test fit-up shots. I wanted to see how it'll look with the yellow(ish) against the red headlock rings. Probably be another week or so before I get time to finish the paint. Ugh, and that's not including dulling the finish of the stock dashboard, which I would also like to detail with paint rather than the stickers it came with. I've also got a few sets of Team Raffee double spring shocks (90mm, 100mm & 110mm) on their way to try out different mounting options. As for the front bumper I'm looking at the ScalerFab Pro Series SCX10 II Comp-Style Front Bumper with Trail Bar. $82 with fairlead and shackle mounts isn't too bad I guess. If I go that direction I think I'll try my hand at brazing on extensions similar to the stock Marlin bumper to keep the grille & body somewhat protected.

Last night I stretched my 1.55 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC tires on a spare set of 1.7 Marlin Crawler beadlocks I have. Took absolutely zero effort, and they look great. I used the foams that came with the Axial kit (for the MT-45 tires). The foams really fill out the tires though they do make 'em feel a little stiff, kinda like the stock tires that came with the Marlin. I figure under the weight of the completed truck it should be fine, though. I'm probably gonna order up some M2.5 acorn nuts from LockedUp and use some 10mm long set screws for the wheel studs to finish them up. I'll post up some photos when I get home from work.

Quite a noticeable size difference compared to the 1.7 Iroks. In case anyone wants to know, mounted they measure roughly 4.460" diameter X 1.875" wide.

So I'm finished painting for now. The dashboard will remain the shiny plastic for the time being. But got the final coats on the body, and the fender wells are no longer bright white. I also included a pic of my friend's 1:1 Cherokee sporting 46" Baja Claws (the original inspiration for gettin' them tires). The Wagoneer in the back, if I'm correct, sits on 40" Hawgs.

Well, the exterior is nearly done, with the obvious exception of the bumpers. I think I may paint the inner bed black though I do kinda like it as it is. Still waiting on the wheel hardware, due Monday, and the shocks, which finally got updated to shipped status. I eventually want to work on an interior and a driver for this one too.

Thanks Durok! This is the first hard body I've painted and it was kinda a rush job cause of kids, wife, and work taking up majority of time, but I like the way it came out.
