Default SCX10 II Deadbolt axles

I recently aquired an old 10II and it seems to have a different axle and diff cover than the one I see in the online manual. It looks like the axle is in two pieces clamshelled together. Are the gearsets the same for these?

Thank you !

Could it be an original scx10? If I’m not mistaken those housings were a clamshell type.

Sounds like you have the OG Deadbolt.

Yea, that's it. Got it used and the listing said 10 II. I really didn't know the difference. Are the internal gears the same? Or can I just upgrade to newer style axles?

The transmission is the same as the 10-II, but the axle gears are different and larger in your 10-I. So, it’s your choice to go as-is or swap for the smaller 10-II axles. The AR44s on the 10-II are more scale in appearance but not necessarily an upgrade performance-wise. This is my opinion, of course.

I wish I could just go as is, but it sounds like there is a problem with the gears. I haven't opened them up yet, but I guessing there's missing teeth somewhere. Do the 10-II axles have the same width?

I'm my opinion the 10.2 AR44 are and do perform better smaller pumpkin has more ground clearance and 45 degree steering, from what I understand the smaller ring and pinion are supposed to reduce torque twist too

The 10-II axles are about 1/4" shorter than the 10-Is. You can buy take-off axles on eBay in any flavor these days cheap.

Thank you for your help everyone. Shame on me for not inspecting the truck in better detail, but it's nice to know I have options.

Looks like Amain sells under and overdrive gears for the 10-I axles.

Going from a 10-1 to 10-2 axles is not very difficult, but there are changes that will have to be made.

Chassis mounted servo is going to be the first thing, and it will have to be nearly 100% custom on your part.

then the links will have to change, probably not the lowers, but the uppers depending on the style of your axle based upper link mount.

Just something to consider, gears are cheap to replace in those old axles.

Thank you lonleycreeper. I ordered some gears from Amain, but only saw over and underdrive. I'll try the underdrive for now and see how it goes.

Have you opened up the axles to see what the noise is? You might want to do that before buying any new gear(s).

even if the gears are still ok in the axle the underdrive gears are a good upgrade

the original transmissions the little gear inside the transmission goes bad pretty quickly they sell steel gear sets but in my opinion for the same price the cheap aluminum 3 gear trans on ebay are the way to go i havent killed one yet after 10 years of tryin

also you probably have the old wild boar drive shafts that completely suck

and then theres the front axle shafts that dont play nice with anything and is the main reason to upgrade to 10.2 axles
you can beef up the scx10.1 axles using ar60 chubs and knuckles and custom axle shafts but its still cheaper to build a 10.2 axle at this point

there are a few advantages in my opinion to using scx10.1 axles they have a open diff option they work really good on leaf sprung rigs and they use the same gears as wraith axles so i can run a ar60 front and a scx10.1 rear
if you do upgrade dont toss those axles hold on to them you might want them for something later

Thank you again guys. I stopped at a local Hobbytown, and their assessment, is the motor is shot. It's really jumpy at low speed. So a cheap new motor it is for now, but I still plan on doing the underdrive gears. The 10.2 axles sound great but I'm not sure about doing the servo relocation. Maybe in the future.

there isent much differance between the 10.1 and 10.2 besides the axles so the parts to upgrade the axles from a 10.1 to 10.2 axles will basicly bolt on worst case you would have to drill a hole or 2 in the frame but all the parts are available you dont have to fabricate anything

you dont need to upgrade the axles but dont put any money in to those axles save it for your new axles but since you dont have any 10.2 parts you could go to 10.3 axles ether straight axles or portals its a pretty simple process and you can change the axles and keep the rest of the parts so upgrading the trans and driveshafts when your ready will carry over to the new stuff just fine

After pulling the motor out and spinning the wheels, I still get chattering which seems to be coming from the transmission now. This is a fun little rabbit hole I've got here. I appreciate all your help here everyone.

The ring and pinions on the scx10 OG are the same as ar60's, so any wraith/ smt10 gears fit. This is also why the pumpkins are huge.
