Default SCX10III with 3 gear transmission

The SCX10III has a cool transmission with it's scale forward motor position, 2 speed gear set, and dig function out of the box. The downsides are the new transmission is huge, heavy, and introduces a lot of slop from those nifty multiple speeds and dig. The old 3 gear transmission isn't scale but it is much lighter, incredibly strong with a few upgrades, and is refreshingly slop free.

Since I have never seen it done before, I decided to see if it works.

The quick version is it does with a little help.

An old 3 gear skid doesn't work on the new SCXIII chassis because the 2 center mounting holes don't line up and the new upper link mounts. Since I needed to keep the stock SCXIII, the plan was to make an adapter that bolts to the transmission then attaches to the 2 holes in the new skid. The transmission was clocked at an angle to allow the motor to clear the upper link mount without raising the whole transmission too much.

The transmission has to be mounted in the spur forward position in order for the driveshaft to line up with the offset of the front axle. The only change from the stock parts is adding a longer rear driveshaft. If you are like me, you have a ton of Wild Boar HD shaft pieces laying around.

With a 3 gear trans and a relatively modest 56/13 pinion/spur gearing, you end up at about an 80:1 overall gearing.

If you are one of the people looking for a solution to SCXIII drivetrain slop, here is the answer.

Nicely done!

That trans leaves a ton of open space. I'll keep this in mind for possible future builds!

Thanks, I'm pleased with how it worked out.

If you are curious, swapping the stock trans to a 3 gear shaves about 1/2 pound off the truck.

80:1 that's nice. I've got 60:1 in my wraith, 80:1 sounds like it'd be nice on 4s with either a revolver or, a nice 2200 or even 2700kv puller pro (would be my choice). What's you running in there?

It’s a Holmes Puller Pro R 4100kv.

Mostly it was put in there for mock up to make sure long can motors fit but I’m kinda tempted to run it to see what happens.

Most excellent sir! Would you be willing to share the mount spacer? Is the enough drive shaft clearance up front to run AR44’s?

I'm working on making it available.

As for the driveshaft clearance, there is a ton of it and you could easily run a centered front axle.

Made a few tweaks, still a few more I want to make. The goal is to have everything still fit under the interior of the stock body.

That is so cool. I am blown away by how much space is created by switching out to the 3 speed trans. Nicely done.

Any update on this please? I'd really like to use the 3 gear transmission on mine too.

Just so you guys aren't disappointed: It is an original 3 gear trans from the SCX10, not a 3 speed trans.
