Humor a newb question...

Can I upgrade/replace the motor and steering servo while keeping the Spektrum Firma 40a receiver/esc? What are good budget options?

Yes you can personally I'd recommend a Holmes Hobbies 550 torquemaster sport or a crawlmaster sport you just have to watch minimum turn rating with that esc. Reef 444 servo is pretty good too.

Servo upgrade will most likely need an external bec and a Rx bypass

True as well unless you run a 6v servo. Savox also has some decent servos as well. I definitely agree on external bec though. There is I think a castle plug and play one that has built in bypass or it may have been a heyok one

Hey ok. As Mikemce mentioned, Holmes Hobbies has the bypass.
