Harley's Wraith Sportsman

Crawlapalooza is coming up in just over a week. We will be running a Sportsman class as well, which is just like 2.2 but is for shaftys only and no dig allowed. I built a bad ass sportsman a couple years ago but yesterday I decided if I was going to go through all the work to get it going again I might as well do something all new and awesome 8)

So at 4:00 yesterday afternoon I decided I was going to do it, and it had to be a AR60 axle base. So while this truck will not resemble a Wraith at all, it will have started as one.

Here we go...

Axles

I had to make a lot of quick decisions and phone calls. I don't have time to do a bunch of fabricating in order to get this thing done. I started at the axles, I already have a set of stock axles from my second Wraith so that is the base. Then I rang up Steve at Vanquish...

XR10 Knuckles, C's hubs, Knuckle Weights, Lockouts, Servo Guard, Ti Drag link and Ti Tie-rod

Next call went to Kevin at TCS to pick up the parts I don't already have.

Axial underdrive rear gears, Axial overdrive front gears, Junfac driveshafts, I'll be using the stock HD lockers for now, and hopefully have some Axial Universal joints before the comp too

Chassis and Suspension

Next choice was chassis and suspension. While I was bugging Steve I figured I would ask if they still had some Incision's still around. Lucky for me they did! So after getting some info on the skid plate that it uses I threw it into a model in Solidworks so I could check some link lengths. I want to use Vanquish's Ti links they have available for the Wraith, and again, lucky me they work out about perfectly 8)

Then again back over to www.TCScrawlers.com to snag the shocks I wanted. Some Traxxas Big Bores Long's were my choice.

Rolling Stock

Vanquish Wheels are an obvious given. I have yet to see anyone give the VP a run for their money on wheels. 8)

Another set of SSZ's will be slapped on, because I love some bling'ed out wheels :afro:

Mounted to those will be a set of Losi Boss Claws from www.TCScrawlers.com and at this point my foams are undecided.

Power

Again, some quick decisions and phone calls and my stuff is on the way.

First I called John at Holmes Hobbies. We talked for a minute and decided on the 13 turn Crawlmaster with Checkpoint end bell. These motors are so smooth, I can't wait to see how it does in this rig. To push the Crawlmaster we went with a BRXL and threw in a Castle BEC for good measure.

The batteries I'll be using are from Hobbypartz.com and are 3s 450 GenAce packs. I have been running these in my XR10 and have had good results.

Control

Futaba. We all know why 8)

This servo is 514 oz/in and has a speed of 0.11 seconds!

Make it all work together will be my Futaba 4PKS with a Futaba 614 RX.

Harley,

I thought that you couldn't run the overdrive and underdrive gears at the same time? That the gear ratio is too far off that it causes a bind, ie breakage..

Drail 09-29-2011 12:02 PM

gonna be a killer rig...as allways with your builds"thumbsup" Drail

It's not a good idea in a rig that goes fast as there is a lot of bind. A comp rig is a little different of course. The gear sets will cut my turning radius WAY down and give a dig like effect when climbing. I ran this setup before and loved it.

Have you had good results with the junfac shafts? Better or worse then mip? Haven't seen them much so I was curious

I have ran them in my Sportsman before and they did fine, just need locktite on assembly like everything else. I have not tried them in a high stress situation like the Wraith or a TTC rig though.

PipeDreams 09-29-2011 12:17 PM

Cool thanks for the info.

DRCrawlGood 09-29-2011 12:19 PM

Surprised it took someone this long to try these axles in a sportsmen setting.

hoghead5150 09-29-2011 12:28 PM

what was the part number on those junfac driveshafts? will they fit a stock wraith??

mjderstine 09-29-2011 12:31 PM

the files arent opening in the control department...

wondering if that motor is a bit to high speed. it will definitely have all the power you ever needed. and wheel speed.

just being curious i suppose.

i have a cobalt 13t motor, and that thing was as fast as a MM 4600 brushless.

I hadn't seen one yet but I'm sure they'll start popping up soon with the new seasons starting up.

You can click on any picture in this thread and it will link you to the part and where to get it. I have not used them on a Wraith so they may be stretched a little far. However Junfac has longer shafts available.

A 13t Crawlmaster is much different then a 13t Cobalt. The Crawlmaster motors are a 5 slot are instead of a traditional 3 slot arm. So this motor will be close to the equivalent of a 27t traditional handwound, only MUCH smoother down low.
