There's been a lot of talk lately about killing pinion bearings and some folks were discussing thrust bearings, so I found some right down the road at Avid and ordered them up. At $3 each, they were a pretty good price, but I dont see the need for these to replace both bearings around the pinion.....only the inner bearing. These bearings are 5x11x4.5.......0.5mm thicker than the stock bearing, but there is a slight amount of in/out play in my pinion, so I figured I could deal with the extra half a millimeter.

Here you can see the play I am talking about:
(pushed in)

(pulled out)

The stock bearing (same as when I originally built the kit)...it doesn't feel as smooth as a brand new bearing, but that's to be expected for almost 2 years of play time.

The stock and new bearing side by side:

As you know, this is a three piece bearing......the outer piece with the smaller ID goes on first. This will bear the load from any pinion deflection. Then the bearings (I added a drop of shock oil). You can see that the bearings do not touch the shaft. They will not see any load changes as the shaft moves in and out. (I feel like there is a joke in there.......somewhere )

Then the outer piece. Again, it does not touch the shaft:

The gears installed nice and smooth. I did not crank down on the bearing cap bolts as usual. Just snug. There is only a hair of play now. Perfect! This should fix any bearing failure problems some folks are having......AND no need to get rid of the benefits of a bearing over a bushing.

Interesting use of a thrust bearing, keep us update.

EDIT: BUt I would have greased it instead of shock oil.

Who knows if they'll hold up, but we'll see.

Nice find Jeremy!!!
Now just get some MIP shafts so you can drive it for more than 10 min and do some testing...

I put a bit of time on this truck yesterday. I drove it about how I normally do....crawling, jumping, full throttle donuts and never had an issue (except for a broken front servo....again....these futabas are junk in this truck). The rear pinion bearing looks just like it did when I put it in there. It feels perfectly smooth as well. IMO, if that rear thrust bearing was going to have any issues, it would have been from the full throttle jumps while staying on the throttle to force it to land on the rear wheels. That would result in the highest torque gradient. I jumped this truck like this probably 30 times that afternoon.

Here are a few short vids I shot with my phone.....listen for that front servo hating its life.

WOW! A successful run without blowing up a drive shaft. Looks like the rig is performing well!
I see you are practicing at the new spot?

Gotta say im impressed with what you can get out of your wraith. Mine is setup VERY similar to yours and im still struggling with it, obviously you've got the driving ability to get the most out of your wraith too

I think mainly its figuring out how to drive something that isnt a scx
Its mainly the huge belly and long wb that gets me in trouble. I really need to use it more that is my main issue. Its not a nimble scx but its also no comp rig either, its a different beast altogether

That's absolutely true. Practice will help you get much better with this truck. Using rear steer quickly and efficiently is one of the hardest aspects of this hobby, IMO. It took me a long time to be able to make the rear do what I want it to do when I want it. In fact, I have the rear steer on this truck setup exactly like I do on my Super.....so driving one or the other is good practice for both.

I break both s9157 and BLS152 servos. I have some new 7950's coming for this truck.

Jeremy - ive been on the fence about ordering a wraith lately...
I think reading all of this thread makes me really want one.
Heres my dilemma - I want to order a rtr for now.
I have a spare savox high torque servo ( like 400 oz )
Besides the plastic beadlocks on the PS wraith... do you know of any differences between the two rtr wraiths?
Thanks man.
Sorry for bothering your thread. Just thought id ask since youve had a wraith for awhile.

I believe all that is different is the tires, wheels and the body panels.
